View Full Version : Why did you join?
Just curious as to why others joined the Navy... I joined because I was going into my senior year in H.S. and had no other hopes of finding a job that actually counted for something. The recruiter made it sound like a Club Med cruise. Little did I know that recruiters will say anything.....lol. It was no Club Med, but it wasn't digging ditches either. If I could find my recruiter right now, I would shake his hand. Why did you join?

I joined in 1961 -I had already taken my physical under the selective service(known to all those that knew and loved it as the draft) I passed with flying colors so not liking the idea of diging holes in foreign soil I checked out the other services the navy's version of the fantistic ports of call sounded really interesting -plus they garenteed an avaition rate and school if my test scores were good -I wanted to be an engine mech....of course when I got my orders out of boot --going to AE"A" school I thought this is cool until I found out that was the Electricians school---It actually turned out pretty good as the civilian airlines liked people that knew what an electron was.. :gift:

I took my uncle's advice. "Join the Navy and let the ship carry the guns".

I was drafted. One of the last ones. I thought I would join the Navy and I enlisted for 4 years in order to get an aviation school. I was qualified for the rate I wanted, ADJ but guess what, they sent me to aviation ordnance at NAS Jacksonville Florida. This was something I could really use in the civilian world. So, my enlistment did very little good for me except for the fact that it forced me to grow up. And for that I am grateful. I also got to see half of the world and I got to experience Olongapo City.
Worked for pops and he did well.

I notice that myself and gary94 were convinced by the draft or potential there of to join uncle sams big canoe club ,it seemed to me like we got a pretty big cross section of american culture due to this ,I always wondered that after they discontinued the draft if this large cross section disappeared and went to a narrow slice of the population .Perhaps the people who were in after the draft was discontinued could enlighten us about that .. ;)

I grew up on a farm in southern Minnesota. I joined because I hated Minnesota winters  ( I now live in San Diego) I hated farming  ( I now work at North Island overhauling jet aircraft) In 1969 my birthday was drawn as #6. In order to not go to 'Nam, or to be drafted, I joined the Navy. :D :D I retired with 21 years and I also am a USS Midway Volunteer.

Some of the engineering rates were harder than digging ditches. I don't see how they survived 6 on and 6 off. Hot, dirty, and loud. I had to go down there on occasion, but I didn't stay there long. :)

Just curious as to why others joined the Navy...
Why, because my Dad tricked me, isn't that how everyone joined? :hehe:
I was on the fast track for dropping out of High School in senic Moreno Valley (a.k.a. Moron Valley), and looking forward to a high-paying career at either K-Mart or Venus Burger. So, my Dad set me down for "The Talk". He gave me three options:
1. Continue going to school, and eventually college. Dad pays for everything.
2. Drop out of school, get a job, pay rent on my room.
3. Drop out of school, move out, pay rent to someone else.
So, I promptly chose option #4! Join the Navy! YEAH! Snap! Showed you!
"They wouldn't take someone like you!"
"Oh yeah?!?! I'll call now!!"
"Go ahead! You'll see!"
Fast forward 3 months, finding me in Boot Camp...
"Hey, wait a minute..." :scary:
Looking back, I remember a whole slew of hints about being out at sea, visiting other countries, the honor of defending our country...
I had no real choice, I lived 6.5 years in a boys home in Texas and my family didn't want me so I hated school so the service was looking pretty good! After 13 years I said to myself WTF am I doing here? So I got out, I liked it alright, but you get to a point of no return and the fun meter pegs quick after that point. Thats my story :!!!: :hehe:
