Ah yes...our favorite Atsugi ghost yarns...

1. Old Red eyes.

The corrosion hanger across the way near Nippi had "Red eyes". The story goes he was a disgraced Kamakazi who killed himself after refusing to go on a suicide mission in WWII. Red eyes sometimes showed up as a set of red lights, other times as a fully dressed Japanese pilot.

2. The man killing tree

The only tree on the whole flightline area that everyone feared. Screw Charlie Brown's kite eating tree, this old Japanese Elm had the habit of killing people with axes, bulldozers, chainsaws and even one old rumor claimed a plane bounced off it. The cut marks in the trunk are still evident though, and so too are the daily offerings of Beer, sake, wine and fruits.

3. Air Force Major, Corrosion hanger

Back in 1987 while USS Midway was gone for a 6 month cruise after her major overhaul, an air force major with a flying student crashed his cessna into the runway killing both men. The wreck was stored at the corrosion hanger. That night, AQ1 Luciano "Lucky" Tandino was on watch in the CAG office when he got a call at 10pm from the hanger watch who reported that a man identifying himself as an air force major had walked by the watch asking to look at the wreckage. When the watch looked into the hanger the man was no where to be found. The incident was logged.

I remeber the Old Red Eyes stories... When I was TAD to the transient line my supervisor told us that story. About 2 weeks later AD2 Bailes and I had to go get some GSE equipment from there. We didn't see anything unusual but, that was possibly the spookiest hangar I have ever been in. It was earily quiet.... I mean absolutely no noise what so ever. No breezes. Nothing. It just seemed like it should have been in the Twilight Zone. Needless to say, we hooked up the cart and got the Hell out of Dodge. With the hair on our necks standing on end.
