I don't want to down my sister ships (Stenis and Nimitz) but when an out of town Carrier can send a crew to work aboard Midway while the others take almost no command interest, that says something.
We not only had a great time doing work on the old Magic, for some of us in the group it was good to be back aboard our first ship and best ship in the fleet.
While we were around the area we met so many civilians who showed a general wanting to talk to active duty Sailors. People were polite, proud to shake our hands, gracious with their comments and happy to have met us.
This is real public relations not only good for the Midway's future as a fixture of San Diego but good for the Navy in the end result. I didn't want to believe that this great oportunity for public service and high visability was being blown off by the locally based Nimitz class carriers.
Yes I'll rub it in your faces. I always hear about bad things from commands...people getting in trouble, morale's not good, motivation lacking and I say it's all a bunch of garbage. All it takes is one guy to look over at the Midway and say..."You know what? That's OUR museum, when people go aboard Midway they're seeing OUR stories and paying tribute to OUR work and OUR history. I think WE should take a crew and GO do some GOOD WORK.
Our young Sailors need such exposure. They hear "good job" and "good work" from their supervisors, let them hear it from the average Joe citizen up close an personal for once. Perhaps this will lower the usual trouble problems we all complain about?
I intend to keep bringing crews from my ship to Midway at every oportunity, even put in a suggestion for the ship to adopt a space for rehabilitation. It would be great if our sister carriers would do the same thing.
It's OUR museum shipmates, let's treat her as such.
