Has anyone found a place to get Lumpia in the states? That was the ultimate food in the P.I. Give me a plate of Lumpia and a San Magoo and I'm just fine.

Two places in Washington State.

Whidbey Island: Mal Subaya's Asian market

Bremerton: Kabayan Asian food mart

Hey, you can make it yourself.
Recipe (http://www.gumbopages.com/food/filipino/lumpia.html)

Man, remember Filipino day on the ship when the chow hall served Lumpia, Poncit, and Adobo? Too bad they didn't replace the milk with San Miguels. ;)

Hey Dylumph! Did you and your Dad have a good time on the ship? I wanted to chat with you after the program, but had to go get my wife and daughter.

N A S T Y

Had to eat four of those "N A S T Y" things during my Chief's Initiation at the Club at Subic. By the third one I was getting used to the taste, instead of chugging the fourth, they made me chew it slowly. I felt the little rubbery feet on my tongue and let them dangle from my lips. They decided I was enjoying them too much so they quit feeding them to me. Besides, I think I grossed them out.

Here's how you're supposed to eat them (from an asian cuisine website):

1.Take a freshly boiled balut in one hand. 2.Make sure you have the "flat" bottom of the balut facing you and tap it lightly on any hard surface until you see hairline crack form on its surface. 3.Remove bits of shell until you have a cavity the size of a penny. 4.Inside the cavity you will find a paper-thin film of white tissue. Remove this. 5.Drop in a pinch of rock salt, place the opening to your lips, tip your head back and slurp up the broth. Delicious. 6.Widen the cavity by removing more bits of shell until you have enough exposed to be able to bite off a sizeable chunk of the balut. Don’t forget to sprinkle more rock salt. 7.Go on eating until you get to the bato (rock) or the hard white portion. Discard. 8.When you get to the bottom, there will be a little more broth left over. Drop in a minute pinch of salt and drink up.

Yummmmm Yum!

I'm sorry mullet. I'd still be an E-6 if I had to do that.

Hmmm...my version:

Get really drunk with your G/F.
Go to her place for some fun.
Then some more.
And maybe a little more.
When you're all worn out (but still have a good buzz!), have her tell you about baluit after hearing the vendor walking down the street.
After finally deciding it's not a joke, pound a few more beers, and say "Let's go for it!"
After she opens the shell, realize you're not nearly  THAT  drunk.
Close eyes and let her feed it to you...between sips of beer...(Yeah, I'm a wimp :p !)
Prove the legend is true!

You're not too far from National City. Time for a short road trip, and don't forget to take some pesos.
:p
