Who remembers these old World War II barracks at Atsugi and the wild drinking parties? I remember when I arrived in Japan and got stuck in the broom closet room at the softball field end of Barracks 47. And today's young Sailors bitch about the nice hotel dorm rooms they get these days.

Ahhhhhhh.... the porch parties. They always started out with just a couple of guys drinking at the picnic tables out in front and by the end of the night half the friggin squadron was there. Sometimes, we would have anyone from the lowliest airman to the Maintenance Officer. It's no wonder that I don't remember half of the time I spent in port!!!!!! How did we ever survive?

Who was that short dumpy PR1 with PRAN Jung...who by the way is now AMC Jung in VAQ-129 at Whidbey, who tore up and set fire to the remains of BEQ 47's picnic table?

I remember a short dumpy AME2 named Randy Bruns. He hung out with AME3 Lance (Ogre) Christiansen. I don't recall a PR1 that hung out with Jung. Maybe that was after I left.

Damn nice post... I know about half of the guys in the pics and it really brings back fond memories.

Well, both Orge and Bruns were dumpy. Ogre had no neck at all, and Randy was thick and squat. And that other fat-ass that hung around all the time... Me. The only thing worse than being the ONLY PN accepted by the airdales? Having Bodean as a roommate. Cat, the 2nd riceball (not that first skinny thing!) STILL misses your massages!! 2 Kids, and a grandson later, we're still a couple. And back in Japan!!! KITTY HAWK sucks, but you know how spoiled the Eagles makes a person. Nothing after that compares.

Cat,

Not able to PM. I'm at sea, doing this thru an internet connection that reminds me of the old 1200bps modems.... I'm lucky if these pages don't time out when loading. I can't imagine that PM would work at all.

pn1baird@kitty-hawk.navy.mil Yep, gonna retire in 10 months as a PO1. And happy to get the hell out. It's just changed so damn much from the good old days.

I did have a tendency to wake up and throw shit... such as... boots, alarm clocks, belts, and pretty much anything within my reach.... lol. Sorry, if I ever wounded anybody. And, Scott... You could have had worse roomies...I did lend you my .357 model one time that saved your ass. lol... and , who put on the slow music (Bob Seger) and exited the room so that you could do the do????? And, I digress... LMAO.... I just kill me......

OH yea, much worse roommates were to be found. Remember I lived with IS2 Chapin (Big, rotund, black guy)? That was torture. I know Dan started this thread, and it's been a damn long time since I thought about those barracks. Think about the crew all the time, but the barracks and the fun we had at them? Must have been years since I thought about it. And then a couple of days ago, I read Rush's post and the memories came rushing back. And I sat in my chair and started chuckling and laughing at the visual pictures.
Especially AEAN Gregg and his little JN girlfriend. Remember him? The guy that kept falling off the wings everytime he crawled up to do maintenance? Yea him... He was hung like a fricken horse, and one day, we are in front of the barracks having a BBQ (and I believe you were there), when we all hear this gut-wrenching scream. As we turn around, we see this chick running out the barracks in the nude, trying to get dressed on the run, and Gregg looking out the window yelling at her to "shut up and get back here". Seems the little mule tried a little "rear entry" action on her, she wasn't aware of the pending entry, and he scared and hurt the living shit out of her. As drunk as we were, we couldn't stop laughing at the poor thing. Only in the Eagles....

Whatever happened to Gregg?

A few years ago, AE3 Gregg was assigned to Naval security in Okinawa, had just missed AE2 by less than 1 point, and for some reason he was in Yokosuka. He seen me, asked for some helpe because apparently, they didn't give him that 1 point we used to get for having been assigned to the FDNF. I contacted his admin office, gave them the reference for the 1 point allowance, and they corrected his exam worksheet and he eventually got advanced to AE2. That was the last I heard of him. I think there is a "where are they now" thread on here somewhere, if I get a few minutes, I'll bop in there and put down what I know about who.

 That sounds like Barracks 47/50. Where are the CAG5 guys berthing now? I lucked out and got old officer's housing when my name for on base housing finally came up. You know where the CAL lab is/was inbetween a park and the old commissary? The street behind the CAL lab had houses on one side facing the airfield. I had the last house on that street. For Atsugi in the early 80's that was good living. :D

That sure is Stretch. I heard from him a few years ago. He sent me a link to the story of the VA-95 BN that partially ejected from an A-6 and they had to trap like that. At the time he told me he had retired and was still living in Atsugi. Hey, is the same E club there?

Welcome to the forum Daniel!

I liked the one in the Skyline better, when I bounced it off the 2 concrete telephone poles going down that narrow back road outside Atsugi, boy the look on that old Japanese man's face when he saw me get out of the car, gather up all my cd's and walk off. ( did not know blood was runnin down my head ) Walked to my apartment in Yamato, the look on the future wife's face was even better ( not ), made a phone call to the ship told them I was not comin in due to traffic accident, cleaned myself up and the better half drove me back up to the car, Japanese police and Navy security were everywhere. Boy was I in a sh!t load of trouble!!

I can't remember what the barracks in atsugi were like but I can tell you I stayed in Atsugi and they wern't the best but the worst barracks I ever stayed in were in the P.I. we were up by shit river way down by the second bridge ,(the jarheads had a machine gun post rt next to our barracks)these places were built by the japs in ww2 no glass in the windows no screens and we had no netting -the mosquitos were huge-reason they didn't carry us off and eat us was their wings were to wide to fit thru the windows -so they just stuck their snoots in and sucked the blood out of us.we were attached to Heavy 8 and some of their guys made a beer run we all chiped in -on the way back they crashed the truck into a cement bridge really screwed up the front end on the truck they couldn't get it off the bridge so they thru the beer in the bay to keep the security guys from getting it we tried to recover it later but it was to damn deep. so the heavy 8 and va-25 guys went thursty that night.

On the subject of old barracks anyone remember the ones in Yokosuka?
The old Midway "I" barracks what were they a and b or something like that?
I remember you'd walk in the main entrance and it was like checking into an old hotel then up to your rooms small common lounge then 2 split rooms barely big enough to turn around in with bunk beds,no showers in the room only a community shower/toilet :o and guy's today b!tch if they can't cook in the rooms ;)

Ah, good ol' barracks 47...
I remember having some sweet thing with me, and us running across the hall to jump in the communal showers!

I don't know if you guys heard, they used the soil under 47 as a comparison to see how much cr@p the off-base incenerator has introduced to Atsugi.

Anyone else remember the big anchor between 47 and 50 that would wind up being tipped over like clockwork every weekend?

Boy do I remember those barracks. During my time 74-76, they were open bay. Always bitchen because they were so shitty. I remember one day I believe we were working nights, the coop cleaners took all of the mattresses and pillows outside to air out. That would have been ok, but they never put them back in. By the time we got back from work, and or the NCO club it had rained an they were all wet. Slept on the floor that night. Those were the days. And the kids today say how tough they have it.

Scott.
