As Billntwrk mentioned earlier in another thread, the opening date is June 7, 2004. I'll try to find out what events are scheduled for that opening weeke ASAP. I also received this from NavyBob:

All,

A little more museum news for you. Remember, like any good Navy project, nothing about this is certain yet so don’t hold me to it.

-- Opening day is Monday June 7th. It was originally planned for Saturday, June 5th, but there’s some other major event in downtown that day so they moved the opening to Monday. This is better since we’ll have all week to get the bugs out of stuff before the first weekend crowds show up.

-- A “civilian” ladder is being built. We call it the Bunny Slope. It will be on the after most starboard sponson, directly over where the starboard CIWS was, and will be accessed from the hangar bay just forward of the new men’s head. It will be a standard staircase that will take you from the hangar deck to the flight deck. A small portion of the hangar deck is being cut away to make room for this.

-- Parking on the pier is going to be a mess. The pier is still owned by the city or Port Authority or someone like that. They plan to charge $6 or $7 for parking. If you’re lucky you can find other parking nearby and just hoof it to the pier.

-- We’re not sure yet how the tours are going to work. There will be self-guided audio tours as part of the regular admission price and docent-guided tours for another price. There may not be any docent tours when we first open until we see how the flow of people is going to go. They might also want all the docents to help out with guiding everyone around the first few days.

-- There’s a possibility that docent-led tours will only be by reservation only. If a bunch of you ex-Midway sailors want to get together, I’d be happy to lead your tour. I’m sure I’d learn more from you than you will from me. I’ll let you know more about this as we get closer to opening day. Right now too much is up in the air.

-- That reminds me: When you ex-Midway guys do go on a tour, go easy on us docents. Most of us were not Midway sailors, some were not carrier sailors and a few weren’t even sailors. There’s one guy in my class that was a soldier in the Battle of the Bulge!! So, we’re eager to learn and if we say something that is not quite right, please correct us nicely.

That’s it for now. I’m sure several of us will keep the forum updated with more news as it comes up. See you all in San Diego soon.

Subject : Midway Opening Slated for June 2004

www.midway.org

The countdown has begun to the opening of Midway Magic. After many years of planning, the museum will open June 7, 2004, at 10:00 AM. Museum admissions will be $13 for adults, $10 for seniors (62+) /military with ID, and $7 for children (6-12). Kids under 6 and active duty military in uniform will be admitted free. Commemorative tickets are available at www.midway.org.

Museum exhibits are under development. Aboard will be 4 aircraft -- the Corsair A-7B, Phantom F-4S, Intruder A-6E, and Hawkeye E-2C. Visitors will be able to tour the Island Superstructure, Flight Deck, Hangar Deck and portions of the Second Deck.

More adventurous patrons can also purchase tickets to ride our motion simulator and be a part of an air mission. Still looking for a bigger thrill? Then our virtual reality experience may be just the thing to get your heart pounding. Be a part of the action, jump into a cockpit, and fly your own jet into the action. And of course you'll be able to take home a piece of it all from the Museum store called The Jet Shop. Light refreshments will be available in the Fantail Cafe.

Membership is now available. To request a brochure, email sdacm@aol.com.

Thank you for your continued support of the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum. We look forward to welcoming you aboard this summer.

Sincerely,
Riley D. Mixson

Yeah, I know the announcement has already been made, but my previous post was the official-notice-by-email from RADM Mixon.

I figured it should go here too for all to see :D

Guys,
Navy Bob was a bubble head! Chuckle. He's still one of the good guys though. Like I mentioned in a Pic caption, he is one of the Original ACFT restoration Volunteers, Then he was an Original Pier Volunteer and now he will be an Original Docent. (Seperate, side note. Bob and I were the original 2 volunteers on the Pier!)

What most of you don't know is that Bob has a 90 minute commute to make (One way) in order to get to the pier. Longer when he commutes to the ACFT Restoration Hanger.

I, myself, will transition to the Safety/Security patrol team. Since I served aboard the ship as a photographer and got all over the ship in the course of doing my job, I felt my expertise would be better utilized in this capacity. Our Docent training program is in excellent hands with Rudy Shappee. I have given my unique insite when asked by prospective docents but usually let the training class take it's course. The safety team will be under the direct guidance of the Chief Engineer. Our responsibilities will be to *Lock Down the Ship* on a daily basis, assist the docents by directing lost guests back to the open areas of the ship, etc. We will also serve as overnight security assistants when the Over Night Program is up and running. Our Team leader is Vic Vydra (See the *Where are they Now* album in the Photo Gallery) and Vic says we should be up and running just before the ship contracts with private security. We will help control acess to the ship at teh exit point. The exit point will serve as the Volunteer entrance.

Other duries are still being discussed/identified. Having said all that, Let me offer my own services as a tour guide as well. Bob will give ya the Docent tour, I just get ya around and let ya see what is open to the public.

Today we had practice tours of the entire ship. There were about twelve docents (tour guides) each with groups from six to twelve tourists. All of the tourists were our friends and families. We each took our group to different points on the tour route and then had a shotgun start. I started in Pri Fly, which is near the end of the overall tour route. Things went pretty smoothly but we only had about 100 people on baord. It might be a bit different when there are 1000!!
We'll still have to work out bugs but I'm sure we learned a lot today about the whole touring process. It took between two and two-and-a-half hours for the whole thing. Could be longer if we talk more, probably can't be shorter without deleting some stuff.
But over all, I think today was successful. If you have questions about the tour in particular, shoot me an email.
Thanks. See you all in San Diego soon....
Bob......

Ray,

My Apologies. You sent an email to Billntwrk@yahoo.com. I deleted it by accident. Please re-send. Both Navy Bob and I look forward to welcoming you.

Resend your email and I will respond. I swear before all that is Holy in Subic!
