The group raising funds to get the second Midway Phantom painted in Midway squadron colors is in danger of losing to another funding source... one that will paint the aircraft in non-Midway colors. MidwayPhantom.com needs to raise the money by May 1st.

Please get the word out to ex-Freelancers and Chargers.

According to the site, it looks like MidwayPhantom met the goal and the second Phantom will be painted in VF-21 and VF-161 colors. Way to go!

That Phantom from VX-30 wa supposed to go to USS Hornet in Alameda. Midway already has 3 F-4s. Hope their ship sinks, oh that's right, they didn't check the draft before they parked it. It is on the bottom. Like a old turd.

Hi Crusader and Welcome.

The Midway and Midway Restoration Hangar have two Phantoms, both of which are ex-VF-151 birds. If they're getting a third and it's coming from VX-30 I don't know about it and if it was supposed to go to the Hornet I don't know why they're not getting it. Maybe you can fill us in with an informative post instead of insults. (billntwk has been asked to "rephrase" his reply)

As for why the Midway is hitting bottom perhaps it has to do with the fact that she is hosting a lot more visitors than SDACM planned for. ;)

My Mistake, Midway had only two F-4's to start with. As you may or may not know, VX-30 is retiring it's Phantoms. One was promised to Hornet and after a few phone calls fom interested parties associated with Midway, it is now going to Midway. To add insult to injury, not only do they already have 2 Phantoms, but the VX-30 bird is going to painted in one of those stupid 50/50 schemes (you know, one squadron one one side one on the other). Those are some of the stupidest things I have ever seen. I saw one once on USS Yorktown's F-14. Stupid. At least the plan for the F-4 if it went to Hornet is that it wouild remain in the same paint scheme to honor the last unit to fly it.

I knew VX-30 was retiring their Phantoms. Didn't know anyone associated with the Midway had inquired about one. I'll tell you what I do know. The Midway Hangar started with two Phantoms. The first was immediately sponsored to be painted in VF-142 and VF-51 colors. The second one was up for grabs. The Midway Phantom group consisting of ex-VF-21 and VF-161 personnel started to raise money so they could get the second Phantom painted in their respective colors for $20K a side. Within a very short period of time they announced that instead of having a couple of years to raise the money they now had to do it in 30 days... something like that. Apparently someone else appeared and had the money to sponsor the bird. Since the Midway Phantom guys had first dibs they were given a very short period of time to raise the remaining funds which they managed to do.

What I don't know, but can guess at is the other party wanting to sponsor a Phantom might be involved in the VX-30 bird.

I will agree with you on a couple of points here. As a purist I also don't care for the 50/50 paint scheme. I like things to look the way they're supposed to look, especially when it has to do with history. Naval aircraft did not operate with two different squadron paint schemes. However, I understand why the museums are doing this. At $20K a side these aircraft fetch a nice fee for the museum and the $20K is not for life either. I believe it's only good for 10 years and then you have to renew the lease or someone else can take your spot. The museums need the money to operate, so given the choice of having a musuem with 50/50 birds or no museum at all I'll live with the historically inacurate paint schemes.

I also believe three Phantoms on the Midway are too many. The restoration hangar has an excellent variety of aircraft to restore and possible access to others. I'm just saying I'd like to see a Panther, the COD, an F-8, a Skyraider, or Skywarrior onboard before we get three Phantoms. Just my opinion but, since I'm not a board member it doesn't amount to much.
