View Full Version : The Bicycle

I came across a memory when reading the Snoopy Logs from the 1972 WESPAC cruise. (See Snoopy Log number 56 in the CV-41.org website).
On or about December 10 or 11, 1972, a Phantom dropped ordinance on a Bicycle. (The NVA used bikes, men with packs, trucks, whatever to move war material down the Ho Chi Minh trail, so the bike was fair game as a target if it was on the trail.)
Anyway, the Phantom's plane captain painted two men wearing coolie hats and a bicycle on the plane in the location where a picture of a plane would go if the pilot shot down a Mig.
It was all over the ship that this event happened, and that the plane captain was given a lot of grief for it.
Buzz Nau would like to have a photo of the plane with this bicycle. If anyone has a picture, please send it to Buzz so he can post it.
I also recommend that anyone who was aboard for the 1972-73 cruise, take a look at the Snoopy Logs. I am sure you will see something that you remember. They treat the many times we were extended on the line with some rather pointed humor.

Hell of a story enjoyed it of course one of the reasons is because it reminded me of one our XO related to us ,-----He was out flying around over N vietnam and their primary target was socked in sooo they were told to look for targets of opertunity -he had one 500 pounder left and was looking for some nice spot to lay this egg when he spots a truck hauling ass on a narrow back road ,he rolls over and proceeds to start stalking this fellow at this point the guy in the truck starts really hauling ,with his head stuck out the left side of the truck looking back and cuts off the road and heads for the jungle the XO gets lined up and drops the bomb ,his claim was that he put it right in the tail gate of truck,,but it was a little hard to tell what with all the dust and pieces of truck flying up into the air .needless to say we considered this a confermed kill.although no emblems were attached to the A/C.

If you look at the Midway Sailors site(toilet Bomb) the XO I am refering to is the same guy that hauled the toilet in and dropped it in south Viet nam. :gift:

On the 65 cruise on of our fighters dove on an AA site to suppress ground fire and fired a missle. Missed the AA battery but nailed a water buffalo. The PC painted a steers head on the plane after the wingman confirmed the kill. Wish someone had a picture of that........Trigger
