LAS VEGAS - Some of Las Vegas' biggest hotel-casinos are canceling Super Bowl parties and handing out refunds to thousands of guests after the NFL threatened legal action against those who broadcast the big game on big-screen TVs.

Several hotels received letters last week informing them that their parties were "unauthorized use of NFL intellectual property."

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league only recently became aware of these large-scale parties planned in Las Vegas and elsewhere around the country.

"These establishments were attempting to charge admission for something we are offering for free, and we believe that's a violation of a long-standing NFL policy that specifically prohibits mass out-of-home broadcasts," McCarthy said.

In determining whether an event violated the NFL's copyrights, the league considered the location's size, whether TV screens were larger than 55 inches and whether people had to pay to get in.

Some hotels have scrapped party plans entirely, while others are scrambling to accommodate the estimated 274,000 visitors expected to come to Las Vegas for Super Bowl weekend.

"As far as I'm concerned, the NFL is full of soup," said Mayor Oscar Goodman. "I would tell them to go shove it."

A Super Bowl party inside a movie theater at the Palms was scrapped after the hotel received a letter from the football league on Jan. 23. The gathering usually attracts several hundred people, who enjoy hot dogs and beer and compete in games and raffle drawings for $39.99.

The off-Strip hotel decided to rent dozens of smaller TVs that will be set up in a hotel ballroom, and the beer and hot dogs will be free, said general manager Jim Hughes.

"The Palms is all about the party, and we want to make sure anyone who comes to the property is still going to have a good time," he said.

The Aladdin hotel-casino had to cancel its bash planned at the hotel's 7,000-seat Theatre of Performing Arts after receiving an NFL letter Friday. Officials scrambled to find small TVs that they could place throughout the casino for guests wanting to watch the Super Bowl.

"The city has had events like this for years," said Tyri Squyres, an Aladdin spokeswoman.

Casinos' sports books were not affected. Last year, some $73 million was wagered on the game, according to state gambling officials.

Goodman said Las Vegas was being unfairly targeted, charging the league had allowed "a condition to exist for the past 10 years and then they want to change the rules two days before."

McCarthy dismissed claims that Las Vegas was being singled out, saying the NFL had sent letters to several locations in Boston, Charlotte, N.C., and Houston.

"When we become aware of a potential violation, we take action," McCarthy said. "It's not a city issue, it's a copyright issue."

The NFL's letter was particularly devastating to promoter Todd Krohn, who had organized a party at The Orleans hotel-casino that was expected to draw some 6,000 sports fans at $45 a ticket. He estimated the cancellation cost his company, T & J Trust, more than $100,000.

"Our biggest problem with this was the late notification. If the NFL had made this decision, why didn't they give us 30 days notice?" Krohn said. "We wouldn't have scheduled the event. We wouldn't have spent the money."

Professional gambler Tom Burton said the hotels were providing a community service by televising the game.

"You can't go to the Super Bowl because all the seats are taken," he said. "The NFL just wants to dig deeper and deeper and wants to get as much money as they can. When is it going to end?"

Super Bowl fuels gambling sites' extortion fears
Online sports sites worried by plague of denial-of-service attacks

In recent years, online sports betting parlors or "sports books" have fast supplanted the shadowy world of "bookies," or professional bet takers in the U.S., Canada and Europe, growing into a multibillion dollar industry, despite official disapproval from Washington, D.C. lawmakers and U.S. religious conservatives.

But with the biggest sports-wagering event of the year, the U.S. National Football League's (NFL's) Super Bowl, just days away, proprietors of many online sports books are worried more about their bandwidth than betting patterns, and wondering whether their biggest day of the year will also be their last day in business.

With little notice by law enforcement or the outside world, online sports betting parlors, or sports books, have suffered a plague of sustained distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in recent months that have knocked some Web sites offline for days or weeks. Other sites have been forced to pay protection money to keep their gambling operations online, and criminals are turning up the heat in preparation for the NFL's biggest game of the season on Sunday, according to interviews with those familiar with the problem.

I always liked the Coke commercial, I thought the rest were lame.

Jeez, everybody has Superbowl parties. That's nonsense. The hoster is charging for food and beer as a rule. NFL should get a life.

Again. If I want to bet on sports games here, it's thru a government run lottery. I don't bet, except occasionally on horse races. I think I jinx the Jays and the Leafs if I bet on them.
I don't care for football, but that's my choice. It's great y'all enjoy it, ya might even get to watch it if ya come to my house. ;) :D

CBS apology

http://www.foxsports.com/content/view?contentId=2105940

NEW YORK (AP) — CBS apologized on Sunday for an unexpectedly R-rated end to its Super Bowl halftime show, when singer Justin Timberlake tore off part of Janet Jackson's top, exposing her breast.

"CBS deeply regrets the incident," spokeswoman LeslieAnne Wade said after the network received several calls about the show.
The two singers were performing a flirtatious duet to end the halftime show, and at the song's finish, Timberlake reached across Jackson's leather gladiator outfit and pulled off the covering to her right breast.

The network quickly cut away from the shot, and did not mention the incident on the air.

It was unclear whether Timberlake intended to expose Jackson's breast.

Wade said CBS officials attended rehearsals of the halftime show all week, "and there was no indication any such thing would happen. The moment did not conform to CBS' broadcast standards and we would like to apologize to anyone who was offended."

The Super Bowl halftime show, which also featured Puff Daddy, Nelly and Kid Rock, was produced by MTV, CBS' corporate cousin in Viacom.

"We were extremely disappointed by elements of the MTV-produced halftime show," Joe Browne, NFL executive vice president, said. "They were totally inconsistent with assurances our office was given about the content of the show.

"It's unlikely that MTV will produce another Super Bowl halftime."

And here comes the hand off by Jackson to Timberlake.

Timberlake takes the pigskin and exposes Jackson to the field.

Timberlake fumbles and Jackson tries to recover but to no avail!

The boob is down on the 50 yard line!

You all know I'm not a prude, by any stretch of the imagination.. but I would have been pissed if I'd had a child watching with me.. especially if I'd actually gone to the game.

My boyfriend kept wanting them to show the streaker... I can't wait to show him the pictures. I'm gonna build him up with a description of the shiny thong first ;)

It was staged. MTV said before the game that there would be some shocking moments with Janet. Now, of course, they deny it was planned.
That 'thing' is a pastie of a silver sun. Yeah, like all women wear them under their clothes, just in case their tear-away top gets popped.
Either way, she's got nice tits. :D

Yeah they're nice. Big nipples too. Or is that because of that silver thing. How is it attached? They screw it on the nipple? Barb? You're into hardware, aren't you?

:hehe: @screw it on

The ones I have dealt with are spring loaded...hard to explain I guess. They expand a bit and you put them around the nip.

Yeah, I heard it was planned as well.

Actually I was at my friends house watching the game. His 6yr old hung around to watch the half-time show... *BOING* She was like, "What did he just do...?

All in all it was a cheap stunt in another lame half-time show. I give more credit to the streaker.

I was too drunk, my vision was too blurred to see detail

What is wrong with the Jacksons???

The first thing I said when Janet came onto the stage was that she was wearing way too much clothing, I mean, this is the Superbowl, ya gotta sell out..............then ole JTim rips her damn tit off.........How do you thing Miss Diaz felt about that?

She had on so many clothes because she's just a little chubby at the moment. That's not a put down, just stating a fact.

First of all I think it's a bunch of bologna what Justin, Janet and MTV are saying about 'it' being unplanned and an accident. The whole 'boob-exposure' was PLANNED. I'm irrate at MTV for saying 'sorry' but then hyping so much of it up before and after the show on their web site - sorry, my ass - whatever.
My 5 y.o. just happend to catch the end part of the show - exposure and all right when we were getting ready to read a bedtime book (didn't shut off the tv at half time - my bad) Ticked me off roally.
I also was perturbed by that nasty looking wolf movie previews they showed. I mean REALLY, this is supposed to be family TV - not the stuff of nightmares for my young ones.
