Hey Bill if is any comfort to you. I wanted to cross the bay as well but I didn't have the 5 Grand it took to be a captians level or above. But any way I was glad just to be on the pier for this momentous ocassion. Maybe they'll let you ride ol' Midway when they move her to do the dredging. I'll personally come down there and sign a piece of paper saying you rode ol Midway the 75 feet so they can dredge. LOL

ttprince told me about the 75' move for dredging. I wonder if that was classified an 'official mission'?
Hey, anyone else thing they painted the water line really low in Oakland? I mean, shit, you can see the rudders!
:)
I read somewhere the full loaded weight of USS Midway was 74,000 tons. However, if you remove all the fuel, supplies(food and material), the people, the aircraft, and other unlisted
items, I believe the weight of USS Midway is a lot less say 45,000 tons. At that weight ol' Midway should rise up slightly to show more water line.
I believe the "people in the know" just miscalculated how much clearence ol' Midway needs to float in low tide.
I believe (my opinion)that looking at pictures of ol' Midway tied up in Oakland and at North Island, It seems to me, the back end of the ship is heaver than the front end, what I saw is that Midway's bow is a foot or so higher out of the water than the fantail end and that maybe where the miscalculation came from.
Over the last 15 years or so San Diego Bay has been dredged a number of times so that deep draft vessels like aircraft carriers can come and go freely. I dont believe any one had planned on USS Midway ever being parked at Navy Pier and so that part of San Diego Bay, was not heavily dredged. :(

Actually. the quoted displacement is 70,000 tons. No Folks, the water line was not painted high. Yes, she rest's on her Screws and Rudders at low tide. Right now, we are told she is, like 58,000 tons. (No men, planes, equipment, etc)
Will she be moved? Yes she will. 75 feet is what we are told. Dredging? Thats a political football that we don't discuss. Several good stories have appeared in www.signonsandiego.com keyword search SDACM.
Again, Billntwrk@yahoo.com for answers given out on the pier, daily.

Here's what happens when you miss one little detail like how deep it really is!

ttprince and I were talking about this on the 10th. I don't ever remember seeing rudder unless we were in NORPAC and the bow was eating green water. :D
You're right about her riding stern low in Oakland. They balanced her out before they pulled in to North Island. I almost didn't recognize the ship because she wasn't listing to port.
:)
Hey Midway fans: see some other really great pictures of ol'
Midway see www.ussprovidence.org
Buzz I'll take my camera to the hanger friday(01-30) and git some pics for your site.

What is that cord running along the bottom of the ship next to the Rudder? Is that where they bring the electricity to run the museum?
Bill from Ohio
:)
The power cable leading up to the ship is on the Starboard side just forward of elevator 2. It comes from the generator located on the pier. If you come out to San Diego when the museum opens you'll see all the pier connections as you board the ship.
I haven't heard what that cable is for it may have been there when the ship came down from Oakland, where the ship was painted.
