The 50 Best Guy Movies Of All Time
By: David Chute & Mark Horowitz
(December 2003)
We believe that a true guy movie is a movie only a guy can love. A crucial distinction. Pop one into the DVD player and your wife or girlfriend should run screaming from the room. We frown upon films that are too serious or sensitive. The Deer Hunter got KO'd despite lengthy elk hunting and torture scenes because Meryl Streep was in it. Sure, she's a great actress, but rules are rules: no films with Meryl Streep.
Guy films can be watched in groups, over and over, and you should be able to recite yards of dialogue from memory. Great lines stick in your mind forever, like old pop songs, and when you blurt one of them in public ("Say hello to my leetle friend!" "Don't ever take sides with anybody against the family again"), women and children should give you odd looks, while other guys -- total strangers -- glance over and nod with respect and understanding.
More important, great guy movies are distillations of the male experience, reduced to the essentials. For good reason, nearly all of them tend to be about soldiers, athletes, cops, and every kind of loner. They are unapologetically male, and often politically incorrect: Cathartic violence is practically a prerequisite -- gunfights, sword fights, firefights, fistfights -- whether cartoonish (The Matrix) or brutally realistic (Goodfellas).
I have to disagree with these statements, for myself. I love a good "guy flic". I'm not too fond of many girly girl movies. http://www.horrorhalloffame.com/smileys/poop.gif  A lot of the moves they've listed are some of my all-time favs. I could probably replace a few of the ones they picked with some I think are better though.
I agree with em about Meryl Streep movies. http://bushwhacked.net/forum/images/smilies/smiley-kots.gif
Where's Animal House in the top 10???!!!

Barb, I'm lucky, my wife is like you, she'd rather watch Die Hard over a chick-flick any day ;)
Not a bad list though...CaddyShack, Bullitt, Die Hard, Terminator...

The only good movie with Streep in it was (appropriately named) Death Becomes Her.

That's right baby - any Die Hard over Message in a Bottle or some other chick-flick suits me fine. My line when hubby goes to the video store is 'beat 'em up, shoot 'em down, blow something up movie."

I agree with yas, I'd rather watch something with blood & guts over a tear-jerker anyday.
My favourites are The Great Escape (#40,:what: It deserves better than that ), Mad Max: The Road Warrior (#6, gotta love that feral kid), Gladiator (I didn't notice that on the list).
I think I own most of the movies on that list. :D I could probably add a few more.

Looks like a bunch of chicks made that list. First Blood not on the list? Demolition Man? (and for you Southerners...) Deliverance?

WooHoo! I live with the feral kid. And I totally agree with you on the Great Escape. Also Thunderdome should be in there somewhere.
I think we're missing one important omission.....
Where's all the PORN!!!!!!!

I fit into both categories. Message in a Bottle happens to be one of my faves (and I love Kevin) but Animal House is the movie I have probably seen more times than any other in my whole life! I own it on video and it makes me laugh hard every time I watch it. John Belushi was a legend - still makes me sad to think of him dying so young and so damn talented! I love his brother too. We're getting Jim's sitcom here over the summer - he's cool.
A good movie has to have a storyline - a decent one - so that let's every porn movie ever made out of contention! I grew up with 4 older brothers and I think I rebelled against having to watch guy flicks! I've never seen a Rocky movie, or a Rambo movie - I think I've only ever seen maybe 1 John Wayne all the way through, maybe 2 Clint Eastwoods..... But I love the Flying High movies.... Have any of you heard of Wacko and Evil Roy Slade - they are brilliant movies - if you have the chance, see them!

Well then ladies and gentlemen, we make our OWN list.
My votes: The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven, Mad Max trilogy, Gladiator, Braveheart, Full Metal Jacket, Rumble in the Bronx, any Ahhhnold movies except Eraser, Good Fellas, and Animal House.
What's your top ten? :D

Good calls, but must add the following:
Spartacus, 300 Spartans, Battle of the Bulge, Battleground, Excalibur, Stalag 17, We Were Soldiers, Apocalypse Now and Hamburger Hill.

Hmm, a lot of those 50 just don't seem to fit the definition of straight up guy movies. I saw one recently though that would knock one of a few of these right off the list:
The Siege of Firebase Gloria (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0098328/)
(paging R. Lee Ermey) come back good buddy!
A truckload of testosterone in that one

I will have to go rent this movie and check it out. It sounds good from the description. However, the description reminded me of other good male flicks: Platoon and the Green Beret.

Oh yeah, for Eagle3, Traci, I Love You, with Traci Lords. :D

I forgot about Soldier, with Kurt Russell. I rented it a few years ago, and it was on TV last night. I'll have to see if I can find a copy to buy.
