View Full Version : Oh My God It's Going To Snow!!!!
It amazes me every year....winter comes along and we get snow (in my part of the country anyway), it happens every year....normal occurance.........so why do so many people freak out over this event.
We are expecting our first major storm tonight and tomorrow and everything is canceled before the first flake has fallen......people are rushing to the grocery stores and wiping out the canned goods and supply of fresh milk.......try and buy a bag of salt (good luck)
I just find it somewhat funny as well as annoying.....it snows, deal with it...drive a little slower, space your car a little bit farther away from the others.......I love seeing the senior citizens at the store buying gallons of milk...do they even drink this stuff anymore.....my kids NEED milk...my Lord, go buy some half n half for your coffee and get some calcium pills
bitch bitch, moan moan ....I am done now

Up here snow related closings happen when people can't open their car doors because the snow is up to their windows...otherwise, we drive in it :scary: ...some of us more successfully than others...

Snow sucks here...
2 inches of snow = 4 inches of salt
at least salt is white, we get sand....ugly brown sand that is a mess in the spring wehn it has to be swept up

I hear that...if it aint moving (or moving slow), it's gonna get salted
And Dave, here in the city of Ann Arbor, another one of their bright ideas is to never plow the streets...just dump a lot of sand on them...so you get about 6 inches of brown slop that is actually a lot worse to drive and walk through than the snow it self...not that I'm surprised they'd come up with this, mind you...
I'll never forget "WINTER STORM 2000!"
The local news went fucking nuts that this storm was going to bury us for weeks. Kiss you family goodbye... cows are going to give sour milk... basically they were taking great joy in repeating how fucked we were going to be. We didn't get a single flake.. nadda... nothing. Weather forecasters are tools and I don't mean the useful kind. How can someone that can be wrong over 50% of the time keep their job?
When we're expecting a snow, we go stock up in case we're "snowed in", too.. but the truth is, we just want an excuse to not leave the house for a day or so.. and we want to be comfortable while we're there. It's nice to hang around the house and watch the snow.. with no guilt about all the things you "should" be doing.

The silly thing here is we're all on alert for this snowstorm, but it just keeps moving south and Toledo will get slammed. Happens all the time - the kids get all geeked for a 'snow-day' and sledding and get ripped off. When we do get snow it's this HUGE surprise. We all wake up to huge snowflakes falling and lots of snow on the ground and the weathermen are all stuttering saying, "we knew all along."
Snow for you sounds like rain in LA - everyone broadcasting about the sprinkles waiting for the downpour.

Well, here in Toronto, we're pretty much used to it. Shovel and broom, as well as ice chopper are waiting patiently inside the front door. I dunno how I'll manage with yet another cast on my leg, but I'll figure it out. The chance of a neighbour doing it for me are slim and none. Had to do my own when I broke my arm, too.
Know what you mean Cuda, about someone stealing your nice clean spot. I used to get so mad. Or they would shovel it off the sidewalk up against my car. Now I put my vehicles in storage for the winter.
Eventually I just quit driving in the wintertime. It is amazing how many people forget how to drive with just the teensiest bit of snow on the ground.
They've used salt and sand at different times here; whatever they use, it's always a mess.
My mom once mentioned to my ex that kitty litter was good for traction on slippery sidewalks. I knew she meant the gravelly kind, but didn't he go and spread the clumping stuff all over the front walk. Dumbazz. Took me forever to try to get it cleaned up. Stuck to everything, everyone was tracking it into the house.
No, I don't put much stock in what the forecasters say either. I do watch them, but their track record is not very good.
I don't panic about stocking up. As long as I have tea, sugar, milk, catfood, smokes and beer, I'm fine. I can go days without eating. :)

This seems a good place to post this joke........
Norman and his wife live in Calgary. One winter morning while listening to the radio, they hear the announcer say, "We are going to have 8 to 10 centimeters of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through." Norman's wife goes out and moves her car.
A week later while they are eating breakfast, the radio announcer says, "We are expecting 10 to 12 centimeters of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street, so the snowplow can get through." Norman's wife goes out and moves her car again.
The next week they are having breakfast again, when the radio announcer says "We are expecting 12 to 14 centimeters of snow today. You must park..........." then the electric power goes out. Norman's wife is very upset, and with a worried look on her face she says, "Honey, I don't know what to do." Which side of the street do I need to park on so the plow can get through? With the love and understanding in his voice like all of us men who are married to Blondes exhibit, Norman says, "Why don't you just leave it in the garage this time?"

Funny, here's another laugh for all of you.
We have an adorable news woman in Detroit who has a little more looks (blonde) than brains. Last winter the weatherman had predicted a storm with several inches of snow. As is sometime the norm in our area, we saw cold weather, frost but NO SNOW. That morning the News Gal asked the Weather Guy "what happened to the 6 inches you promised me last night."
 The whole set broke out laughing and it was several moments before anyone could continue on. All red in the face.
Have a fun Monday!

Violation of the basic speed law is a pretty simple concept. Do not drive too fast or too slow (keep your vehicle under control)for weather conditions.
I am curious Jilly the state has to authorize tickets?

They authorise the Police Dept ultimately. In Melbourne at the moment, there's a huge outcry about the state collecting revenue by hitting motorists. There have been several faulty speed cameras found, enough for them to shut down the whole speed camera network and stop issuing tickets. There was a case where a woman was fined for exceeding the speed limit and she maintained her car wouldn't go as fast as the speed she was booked for (I think it was around 160 kph) So they got some 'independent experts' to see if it would, and there was no way in the world it would even exceed the LEGAL limit. The charge was withdrawn and as a result, thousands of other speeding convictions are now in question.
The public see the police as another branch of government, and as I said, this, along with a few other contentious issues, will probably cost them the next election.
Here's a link, some letters to one of the daily newspapers, it should give you the general idea....

Whats more the state government also reduced allowable margin of error from 10% (eg 10 kph for every 100kph) to a flat 3kph, the problem with this is the ADRs (Australian Design Rules) specify a margin of 10% for the speedometers of all new cars sold in Oz
So you can be cruisin' along at what your speedometer says is 94kph in a 100kph zone and get booked by the tax collectors in jack boots for doin' 104kph!
Even the rank 'n file cops reckon it's all a revenue grab, not the top brass though, their too busy suckin' up to the government!
I hope the arseholes do loose the next election, Fuck 'em!

I thought you meant that you would give tickets to people for going under the minimum speed limit - in the snow. (i.e. 45 minimum speed limit on the interstate and someone is going 40 in the snow/ice, so you give them a ticket.)

In those kind of conditions, unless you've got some kind of medical emergency, you stay the hell off the roads. Pretty simple. I'd be giving out tickets too. :nolike:
Never understood why people see it's neccessary to go out on the roads when it bad out. Especially the morons in the SUV's. Saw one flip across the highway behind me the day after we got all that snow. It might not have been snowing, but the roads were still slippery.

I believe you. I have seen the aftermath. Personally, I think it has to do with their center of gravity. Once they go into a roll , you had better hang on.

12-13-03, 07:08 AM
 What's an SUV??? Is that what we call a 4WD?
If it is....I agree with you Wrecker, it's the centre of gravity thing. They're high and they're light. They don't even feel right!(I'm no mechanic) To me, it's against all the laws of everything scientific, that if you're contained within a vehicle that's going over alot of big bumps, then it stands to reason that you should bounce around somewhat.......but you don't. The vehicle that you're contained within absorbs it all, just sucks it up. And there's that 'equal and opposite reaction' theory that applies to everything else........why would these things be exempt? We hear about the same sort of accidents all the time too, specially in winter. City folk who buy 4WDs because they can!!!..... and then think they can conquer mountains and deserts in them, purely because they give them a false sense of security. They're navigating all these treacherous roads in loungerooms.....
.....anyway, that's all I have to say on the matter, I've had far too many   s tonight ....... ;)

SUV stands for sprots utility vehicle it's what we call a 4wd station wagon ie: a Range Rover or a Pajero etc.
To us a ute (utility) is what you yanks call a pickup.
And yes they do suffer from infeiour dynamics due to a high center of gravity and as they are often based on a truck chassis, their design is comprimised to the point of having crook brakes, lousy steering and a bone shaking ride compared to a normal car!
KrzDefKat
12-13-03, 11:31 AM
My pickup is not 4-W-D, which is one of the reasons it will never be driven in the winter. Not worried about my driving, it's all the other nuts on the road. Last night, on the way home, it was snowing (I wasn't driving) and I couldn't believe these people whipping along the 401. Maybe they think they can drive faster than the snow? :hehe:
I live at the bottom of a steep hill, and it's always entertaining to watch people trying to get up the hill after a snowfall. Tires are spinning, vehicles sliding, motors are gunning. What I don't get is why people drive right up behind a vehicle having problems, instead of giving them room to back up to take another run at it, or at least get off to the side. Traffic will be backed up all the way down the street, for hours.
Wrecker, do you have many problems with big trucks? My ex is a transport driver and all his company's trucks have a governor set at 68mph. (I mean, they should drive according to the weather, I didn't mean he has to go 68mph.) Are most accidents caused by smaller vehicles, or do you find many big trucks at fault?

I'm curious about that too - in all weather conditions, not just snowy stuff. There are so many 18 wheelers on I-35 since it goes from Mexico to Canada. Thanks to NAFTA, the number of these trucks is ridiculous. I used to think that truck drivers were courteous drivers, but not anymore. Many of them are downright rude and dangerous! I wish they had their own roads to drive on to get them away from the "normal" automobiles. :nolike:

This could be a whole new topic, Texan. I know this is about bad weather and snow, but while we're still here:
Personally, I cringe when driving beside a big truck. I just want to get away from them. By that, I don't mean driving like H, if I can't get past them safely, I just back off. There are a lot of bad drivers, just are there are in smaller vehicles.
That said, I have been on a few road trips with the ex, the last being this past summer from T.O. to Michigan, thru the states to Washington, up to Prince George B.C. and back home thru Canada. It is a different outlook altogether.
In Nebraska, late at night, there was a car, the driver obviously drunk, and it was raining. He would speed up, out of sight, then all of a sudden, there he was again, weaving all over the place. I kept telling the ex to call 911, before this guy killed someone or caused a serious accident. The phone wasn't charging properly, so not much we could do but try and keep an eye on him. He did eventually get off the highway.
Other times cars would come whipping up alongside, cut in front and slam on their brakes, or just come flying off ramps without even looking. The max weight for big trucks is 74,000 lbs, including fuel, trailers are generally 53', so I don't know how people think they can stop on a dime.
I could ramble on endlessly about both sides. I think there's good, safety-conscious drivers, and bad, reckless ones in both kinds of vehicles.
Now if we want to talk about sleepy drivers, we definitely need a separate topic. Log books and all. ;) :D

Yes there are alot of problems with Semis. We have a Motor Carrier division. (Eagle those are the really light blue Troops you see on the road)
I have heard all the logic. I drive X amount of miles. I am higher up and I can see better, I can't slow down because I'll lose control etc etc. Bunch of crap as far as I am concerned.
We have a big problem with Semis being used to transport drugs, alcohol and money.(off subject sorry)
It varies actually with the amount of enforcement on any given week. I have no mercy on anyone who drives proffesionally for a living. The safety of the public is first on my list.
Since this is a snow related thread, I will comment on that. In the past during the winter, I have found that some semi drivers drive way too fast for weather conditions. On the interstate the speed limit is 70 mph for cars and 55 for semis. Quite often after a snowfall/storm you will find the cars driving at an average of 50 to 60 MPH. I take issue with a vehicle that ways 60000 lbs barreling along at 60 MPH, passing traffic, overly aggressively changing lanes etc (you know the type) I stop them. Bring out the papers driver :nolike:
Overall I do have to say, in my experience, 70% of the semis on the road are AOK.;)
Wrecker, we got popped with another storm on Sunday morning and unfortunately I had to get in the car and drive to New York and back, I got on the road at the beginning of the storm and it started to get slick pretty quick, but if you took it easy you were okay. I couldn't beleive the amount of accidents I saw there and on the way back....bad accidents, cars were slammed intio trees....not fender benders. How fast were these people going to wrap yourself around a tree facing the opposite direction of traffic.
Anyway, I don't envy you on days like Sunday, there weren't enough troopers to cover all the accidents.

Didn't know that, Warthog, being a Canadian, but that's interesting. I was going to start a thread about truckers, but I haven't been around much lately. :what:
I was wondering about the new hours of service for truckers. A friend of mine at another board posted some articles, and we had a mild discussion about it. I asked my ex (a truckdriver) what he thought, and he seemed to think it had more to do with single drivers, and not so much to do with teams.
I dunno if Tex and Wrecker are interested in starting one. I'm kind of on the fence, and have no interest in getting my AZ license; I don't think I've driven, period, in the last year. If I'm in a car, the big trucks freak me out; if I'm in the truck, I can't believe what some of the smaller vehicles do. :scary:
I do worry about road conditions. Any driver, period, should be driving according to conditions. The H with the dispatcher, the H with your getting home for dinner on time. I'd rather have someone late, than never at all. :what:
That aside, I finally got my heat back on yesterday. WoooHooo! I think it was -37C with the windchill Wednesday...I spent almost all day hiding in bed...Friday, they fixed my neighbour's waterpipes (and after only a week!) and Saturday, I noticed people out shovelling the slush away from the curbs, so the water could drain, but didn't a plow out of nowhere come along and plow it back again...:nolike:
Life in the big city. My pipes did start to freeze, and being more of a carpenter/masonry type, now that they're back on OK and running, they're dripping a little (the faucets, I mean).
What's my best bet? Replace the gaskets in the faucets, or let the water run for a few hours...I'm on flat rate , not a meter as yet...I do know better than to twist the taps too far to stop it. Only problem is the area under the kitchen sink is unexcavated, and that's where one problem may lie...
I don't know much about plumbing/electrical. :what: I have a snake, but I can't unjam my bathroom sink...
While the water was a-freezing, thanks to my next-door-neigh -bour, he was unthawing his hose, I now have 6 inches of ice outside my wooden framed basement window. Neighbour leaving the tap running whilst he had the sucker (his stupid garden hose) in overnight?

Jeez Krz! We here in warmer climates have no idea what your winter must be like, and from the fucken horrible picture you've painted here, I'm in no hurry to go and find out!
I think I'll live in blissful ignorance here where it was a warm 31C today! About -10C is as bad as it gets in Oz in places like Canberra, Goulburn, parts of Tasmania n' the sparsely populated high country

 Well, I certainly have no interest in 31C weather either, Seaman. I only hope for you that it doesn't get as humid for you as it does here.
The weather here never really bothered me til a few years ago. It just seems now that there is not 4 seasons. I distinctly remember the difference between spring, summer, autumn, and winter; now it just like it's either far too freaking cold or far too freaking hot and humid, with a few weeks of actually enjoyable weather somewhere in between. :what:
I used to enjoy the winter. I'd be right out there building a fort and firing snowballs, and we always made a skating rink in our backyard.
Summers aren't what they used to be either. Now it's just freaking humidity. Can't get things done when you can't breathe.
Maybe the hole in the Ozone layer is right over Toronto, I don't know. :hehe:  Maybe I'm just getting old(er).
OMG, it's fuckin' 30 below. :scary:

Laruie It's freezing here too. Have you got your brass bra on? I should be topless with my sister in Jamaica right now. :what:
It actually reached 12 here today so I took my bra off. I hate wearing bras when it's balmy like that.

You have that whole dry heat thing going on. I landed at MSP(airport code) a few weeks ago it was 2 degrees,When I returned to MI it was 14. Much colder here.

It started snowing here early this morning. I shovelled about 3 inches off the walks at 11:30 a.m., and just went out and shovelled another 4 inches. At least it's light and fluffy. Supposed to snow all night and all day tomorrow, although I heard there may be freezing rain as well.
-13C here, with a wind chill of -21C. Brrr!
Traffic was crazy  I swear these people forget how to drive. In another couple hours, they won't be able to get up the hill here; that's always good for a laugh. ;) :hehe:

The dry heat seems to fade in mid-February when Mother Nature starts preparing for the ridiculously high humidity levels. :what:
Crap, I hear we're supposed to get anywhere from 10 to 20 inches by Thurs.
I blame Canada. :what:

Not quite sure wher Angel Fire is in New Mexico, Sti, but you can try going here and checking out the closest place. I see they have ski conditions listed at a few of them. You may be able to get a long range forecast.

Actually, I just noticed you don't even have to scroll down anywhere. Just click on ski conditions, AngelFire is the first one, and there's a link to the resort.
Hope you don't spend as much time on your butt as I did when I went skiing!

Whoa, Ski Apache is in Ruidoso. Angel Fire is on the enchanted circle in NE New Mexico, along with Red River & Taos. Unless they get some snow, you may be driving to Taos.

Hey, we had freezing drizzle here causing the ever famous "black ice". Not quite freezing rain, nonetheless I hate freezing rain :nolike:

Black ice - the equivalent of two 4-letter words. :( Nothing like hitting it on the way to work at 5 a.m. on an unlit stretch of highway. :scary:
I don't think we've got any freezing rain as of yet; I hear some shovels moving outside. The snow seems to have died down for the moment.

The drive between angelfire and Taos is really nice but at this time of year you may need a 4X4. Course we havn't had any major snow for about a week now so the roads will most likely be fine I'm sure. Hey Stib, if you come through Santa Fe, gimme a call. Angelfire's been advertising the hell out of their resort lately. I don't care much for the place but hope you have fun, of course I don't ski either :sure: Oh and if for some reason you do end up in Taos, they don't allow snowboarders, don't know about Angelfire though. I know how you like to shred and all.

Well, the weather guys had it wrong for us. He said about 2 inches in our area - WRONG. We've had non-stop snow since 7am and we probably have at least 6-7 inches of fress stuff, not to mention it hasn't stopped yet. The weather channel 'says' there's another blanket of the white stuff coming in the night. We've got nowhere to pile up the snow we've got - the kids are gonna love it -
Sideout is plowing the snow ina huge mound at the end of the drive to let the kids build igloo's. Hope you are having fun. Our roads are a mess - so we're staying home.

The older I get the less tolerable of this "winter" stuff I get. :what:
