Just wanted to let you guys know that the Midway was dragged into Oakland on Tuesday 10/07 and is now moored about 500 yards from the edge of Jack London square, next to Roosevelt's old yacht Potomac. I took the ferry from oakland to SF two nights ago primarily to get a good look at her. It was getting dark and this made the view even more sad - there were no visible lights at all, not even at the masthead, no people, nothing on the flight deck, nothing. Still she was clean at the waterline - no visible fouling, and while showing a lot of weathering and lack of care, still has the regal look. Wasn't hard to imagine the excitement of flight operations, even while looking at the silent ship. Best - M
I was reading this and now she is in SD. I remember watching a Dirty Harry movie when he and Hutch(David Soul) we dooking it out on those old carriers in SF. I thought about the flight deck and it's once active life it had. May the ghost never leave our lady of the Pacific.
Saw that film just last night"Magnum Force".Always wonderered where those "Jeep" carriers were.A note, also several years ago I saw in "Metro",
an Eddie Murphy flick they shot on a closed down MARE ISLAND NAVAL SHIP YARD or as we called it,"MINSY".
I used to get gun qualed at Mare Island w/ the Marines. Going up to Marin county over the San Rapheal bridge there were a lot of old moths floating. No Carriers as I recall, but that was 16 years ago???
