View Full Version : USA rugby olymic champions
Its not a well known fact that the US are the current Olympic champions in rugby union.( The game they play in heaven)
The US is one of 21 countries taking part in the Rugby World Cup.The theory was that once the sport took off in the states they would become a world force in rugby. This is mainly because of the perceived athleticism of gridiron players. So far not much has happened but its early days.
USA plays Fiji on 15 october
Scotland 20 oct
Japan 27 oct....kick their arses(asses)
France 31 0ct...Kick theirs too.:D
Australia is in a different pool so we won't play you till the finals if we both get through.
Some of you football fans should try to catch some of the games I think you will like it.
Australia play Argentina on 10 october go wallabies:thumbsup:

Yes they will televise most of the games. Its already impossible to get tickets.I would have thought that you would be able to get it in the states.
Don't watch the France game I don't think you will enjoy that too much though.Give it a couple of years.:)

I never see rugby games televised here. There are clubs but not telecasts. Have to check out the bars.

You guys are a day ahead, right? I think I have it down to Oct. 19, 11 am our time. Then again I never convert time so I may be watching wallaby races. But the Scotland/USA game is in Sydney on the 20th - right?

Yep 20th here.
Eagles played really well last night against Fiji. The odds were something like 6/1 for the Eagles and 3/2 for Fiji.At half time Eagles were up.Fiji ran a couple of tries in but the US fought back and at the end of the second half scored a try which put them 1 point down with the score being 18 to 19.US to kick for the conversion which is worth 2 points and would have given them the game........missed it by a foot.
Still a great game and the Eagles held their own .
Just for anyone unfamiliar with rugby,a try is like a touchdown.
The basic difference between rugby and gridiron is that in rugby you can't pass the ball forward so you have to run the ball through the opposition. No padding.
The U.S. play Scotland in 6 hours from this post 7.30 our time.I'll have to wait till midnight to see the highlights.
I think I'm more excited about the US playing in the world cup than anyone else in fact I might be the only one excited about it.Maybe the Red Socks fans should follow Rugby they would have more chance of winning.:D

...that'll be either 3.30 am, 4.30 am or 5.30 am, depending which US time zone you're in......
Scotland 39 U.S.A. 15
It was very close in the first half with the U.S. taking the lead 6 to 3 with penalties but then Scotland scored a try and the Eagles never got back in the game.
The US scrum out muscled Scotland and the defence was stoic but it wasn't enough to prevent Scotlands backs getting through with overlap created by cutout passes and switches with most of the ball in the US half.
There is a large gap in the second half as I fell asleep on the couch but awoke to see the crowd warm to the Eagles as they abandoned the tactical kicking and just had a go at running it.After all that is what the fans come to see.
Well done Eagles.

The fact that sports played on a global level are considered secondary or tertiary sports here, therefore we don't get a large pool of players to draw upon. However, I have watched soccer go from a laughing stock to world class respectability, maybe the same will happen over the next decade in rugby.

I hear what you are saying but Rugby isn't played a lot in most countries. Its certainly very secondary in Australia. We draw all our international players from about six private schools who traditionally play rugby. There have only been a few Wallabies from Victoria. But international rugby comes with its own ready made spectators and they don't mind travelling.Cities report what a pleasure they are to have as guests. Most Aussies don't know a thing about the game though.
At the moment the US team relies on expat players from other countries.I am hopeful that enough Americans will play the game that it generates its own poularity in the states. If it does you will be a great force in the game which will be great for rugby.
Of all the sport I have played Rugby is by far the best.No quarter is given or expected but once the final whistle blows the comraderie is exceptional. You almost need to have played it to appreciate watching it.This is why it is hard to get followers but ex players are passionate.

I hope this is a tongue in cheek post.
You had no chance against scotland, and they're 3rd rate.
Scotland are 250-1 to win the tournament.

Spaz I'm Australian.
Which part of the post do you hope is tongue in cheek?
They are the Olympic champions.
What because England is playing well no-one else is allowed to join in?We'll see how England goes when they get a ref who stops them infringing in the mauls.:D

England 35 Somoa 22
This score doesn't show just how close this game really was.Not to mention England had too many players on the ground at one stage.
The good thing was the ref did stop them infringeing in the mauls.
The current Olympic champions have broken the drought by beating Japan.
US 39 Japan 26.
missed the game so I don't know how it went
USA play France 31st Oct 3.30 EST.Now I hope they give it too the frogs.:D Who knows what do you think Spaz?

If France field their 2XV US might be able to get a respectable result. Say France by 15 points.
France will be more concerned about Ireland in the QF's than US hopefully the US might be able to take advantage of that, not that I'm biased towards the US.
Quarter-finals
Saturday 8 November
0730: New Zealand v South Africa (QF1) Melbourne
1000: Australia v Scotland (QF2) Brisbane
Sunday 9 November
0730: France v Ireland (QF3) Melbourne
1000: England v Wales (QF4) Brisbane
Predictions anyone?
New Zealand v South Africa -New Zealand by 15 points
Australia v Scotland - Australia by 30 points
France v Ireland - France by a point
England v Wales - England by 20 points

I am chasing them up but I was going to ask you about compatibility.I know when I was in Canada my digital camera couldnt talk to the TV.Someone told me that Australian VHS doesn't work in the states either.I was going to try to get US compatible recordings.
