I hate it how the glorious history of france is forgotten and you call them cowards. The french are who we should thank for many things, for instance, the fact europe is not muslim. Also they were the largest nationality that fought in the crusades, which brought back some of the most revolutionary ideas to europe pre-renissance. They created one of the first national armies, and also made some of the most brilliant weaponary. Their leaders were shrewd and wise, cardinal Richileu kept the french out of the 30 years war for almost half of it with his planning, and when it did come, the french took on the most powerful nations in europe, and won! They gave us victory in the revolutionary war, and then we turned our back on the regieme that gave us victory and helped support its downfall. Ironic that the french monarchy had to raise taxes to pay off the debt from the war that gave us independence, then we support the people when they grow unhappy. I hate the U.S for that.. They protected europe from germany in World War I.. Damn ran out of time..

REASONS FOR BEING FRENCH

* When speaking fast you can make yourself sound gay.

* Experience the joy of winning the world cup for the first time.

* You get to eat insect food like snails and frog's legs.

* If there's a war you can surrender really early.

* You don't have to read the subtitles on those late night films on TV.

* You can test your own nuclear weapons in other people's countries.

* You can be ugly and still become a famous film star.

* Allow Germans to march up and down your most famous street humiliating your sense of national pride.

* You don't have to bother with toilets, just shit in the street.

* People think you're a great lover even when you're not.

Deamon, you used the past tense a lot, and that is the problem with the French. Today they are a mediocre Socialist country. And with socialism comes the inevitable decline. They fear American culture. Its a damn shame. An now with the Euro, they can't even hope for a revolution.

The french have been made to feel worthless and weak after WWII, because they like the Russians lost early on, but unlike the Soviets they didn't have a whole continent to fall back on and a huge population. Since being humiliated by Hitler and shunned and ridiculed by the entire western world, they've come to believe it is so. The British are socialist also, so is Norway, and Germany is trying greatly to appeal more to the former east Germans, Socialism is taking hold in Europe, the real rulers of the Western world, and the original. You americans who can only imitate will be next.

The French have not 'been made' to feel worthless and weak, they are worthless and weak.

Regardless of their arguably significant accomplishments in the past, they are now a purposefully amoral country, as a matter of government policy. They hold no principles, allies, or beliefs dear or steadfastly. The ability to vacillate as whim dictates is their highest governing principle.

They have no rudder, so to speak.

That is why they have become increasingly irrelevant. Even the Taliban had a purpose, that’s the only reason that they held center stage, for even a short period in history.

Without a unifying purpose, there is chaos. You can see that now in France. Crime is skyrocketing, gangs of thugs often control urban areas as in third world countries, no other country trusts them beyond an immediate task. I even read somewhere that of all 'western countries', France has the largest proportion of people who DON’T believe in any god (make of that what you will).

France IS worthless and weak.

Modern day France is a joke. The French even hate each other. The people from Paris hate the people from Marseilles, the people from Marseilles hate the people from Lyon, etc. Yet they love the idea of mother France. Go figure.

I was watching Night Line and they were reporting on how anti-American many people in France have become. For example a group of radicals ripped apart a McDonald's under construction, destroying a million dollar investment. The ring leader was brought to trial and a jury of his peers found him not guilty eventhough the entire destruction of the restaurant was on video and submitted as evidence. He's now regarded as a hero and is one of France's most popular citizens according to Night Line in a poll they did.

Everything that everyone has said is true. As a social or political entity... France bite's le weinie.

But, the French do have a sense of style and an eye for design and the arts. Which is much more than I can say for many American designers.

M'Hansie, I heard that the McDonald's was destroyed not because it was American but because it was corporate and the corporation has a fairly bad record with regards to environmental and labor issues on a world wide basis. I think this has much more to do with WTO issues then anti-americanism.

Eddie, you are correct that Jose Bove (the ring leader who led the charge to tear down the McDonald’s) hides behind such rhetoric as anti-globalism and environmentalism, but don’t mistake for one minute that this is the real cause of these people. They are anti-American to the core. The McDonald’s was torn down just after the U.S. passed heavy tariffs on Roquefort cheese and Dijon mustard. The U.S. did this in response to the EU banning hormone-treated beef. When the EU banned hormone-treated beef did Americans go out and tear down a Burger King (Burger King is owned by Diageo a British company)? No, because we are civilized. These freaken frogs are animals.

Their President, Jacques Chirac, said of the McDonald’s incident, “The farmer’s anger rose of a just concern.” He did qualify his remarks by saying he did not personally approve of the attack, but that is bullshit. You made your first comment, now live by it Chirac. Imagine Dick Channey (the French President is more of a figure head and could be compared best to the traditional role of a U.S. Vice President) saying he would understand a U.S. citizen’s anger if they burnt down a Muslim Mosque. Not going to happen. Chirac went on to show his anti-American sentiment by saying, “It would be in nobody’s interest to allow one single power, albeit a respectable and friendly one, to rule undivided over the planet’s food markets.” How he qualifies his remarks is just pure B.S. Don’t be fooled by Chirac’s or Jose Bove’s qualifications of remarks. Anti-Americanism is at the core of their beliefs.

They are jealous that they are losing their culture to American pop culture and there is nothing more to it than that. I respect the quality of French wines and cheeses and the beauty of their paintings and architecture, but the French are such snobs that they can’t handle having to share time with Coke, Levis and McDonalds. Even more ironic is how they bash American movies yet a French company now owns Universal pictures and wants to merge with USA Networks (owns rights to Jerry Springer show) and most French citizens now think Universal is a fine company. It won’t surprise me one bit that when the French learn they own the Jerry Springer show they will become its biggest supporters based on its cultural contributions.

First of all.. how many people actually know burger king is british? Secondly, french women are cute, I don't care if a few are hairy. And of course the french will think they are worthless and weak because if you hear something enough you start to believe it, France saved europe from Germany in world war I. We forget that. France deserves its former glory, unlike us, who like leeches have taken advantage of other nations, being weak. Mexican american war. Supporting french revolution simply because we might get something out of it, even though it was helping the enemies of our saviours, helping the cubans, helping panama get independance for our own economic benefits. We have nerve to call french cowards.. England has fiercly rival cities, look at football (soccer) hooligans. America isn't, instead they agree to riot on streets together, such is the american way, united? American culture does not deserve to exist and should not exist. We bring world to new lows in greed.. And why can the french not be anti-american in their patriotism, we are anti-Iraqi, and anti-taliban in ours. Why is a french patriot worse than an american?

jhans
01-08-02, 05:20 PM
Deamon, patriotism is a positive value. It deals with the love that you have for your country. If the French want to express their love for France, c’est la vie. No one here has said that they are wrong for expressing their patriotism. Our problem deals with their continual need to increase their self worth via their verbal diminution of American culture. If Americans decide that they want to start eating more French food and watch more French movies I don’t care. It doesn’t lessen American culture. However, somehow when their fellow countrymen begin to yearn for American culture, are we supposed to feel sympathy for their verbal and physical attacks on American targets? If you are going to judge America, at least hold France to the same standard.

Don’t think for a moment that the French helped us out of altruism. The English and French were bitter rivals at the time and helping us out was a way to stick it to the British. Remember that Benjamin Franklin spent quite some time in Paris trying to even get an audience with the King. It was not until George Washington could show some victories that the King would even grant Franklin an audience with him. If the King and France cared about altruism then they would have jumped in early on, but they waited until they were confident that their involvement would help to turn the tide.

Deamon, if you would prefer French culture over American culture, then by all means, BUH BYE!

I'm not going to pretend I know a great deal about the culture or politics of France, because I don't. What I do know is that when something internationally tragic happens....American or otherwise, the French always tend to sit back and criticize, when in fact they have no room to do that. France and it's people remind me of that kid back in grade school. The one who never says a word, but is secretly (though of course, unrealistically) planning to take over the world. Or the stuck up bitch who acts as though she's above God, yet deep down inside she feels incredibly self-conscious. That's who the French are.

Unique? America is full of unique culture. While we didn’t invent operatic or classic music we did invent almost every other form that is widely listened to today. Blues, Jazz, rock and roll, country music (unfortunately) and rap are all American art forms. How about Levis, Coca Cola and the cue de gras, the fast food drive-thru? Is American cinema not unique? How about baseball and basketball? F*%k it, I’m bringing out the big gun. Cow tipping. Scoreboard, game over, we rule.

You can't even spell spanish. So , callate por favor! (How you even ever been out of your home town?)

Just a few brief comments, the French can't fight, their military is what we call in America: The Boy Scouts # 2, Canada is # 1. Why do they run away from wars and leave us to fight their battles ?(Vietnam).

WWI, and WWII, America helped the French sooo much. I have pictures of French families crying at the American soldiers feet b/c they sent the Germans running.

By the way, they don't wear deodorant, don't shave, and are some of the nastiest people ever. They need some lessons on how to cleanse. I used to have a few foreign exchange girls on my volleyball team (makes me cringe thinking about it).

You just can't negotiate with people like that. No, not at all. About the only defensive measure available is to start killing off the infected ones. That's what Vietnam was all about. And you use photos to prove this? Atleast I occasionly back up my points, The french had been fighting the german army for 4 years, and the Russians have surrendered so the eastern front's army came back to support the french, strange as it may seem to you, the germans had a much larger army than france, and better equipment, it was a miracle of great strategic planning that they weren't wiped out at the start of the war.

However, you lose all credibility when you say that Americans are “pathetic”. By what definition are we pathetic? If Americans are pathetic, how do you explain the fact that America is the most powerful, innovative and wealthy country to have ever existed? Do you mean that on a relative basis Americans are pathetic when compared to perfection? If so, I guess I’d agree with that. However, if it is just a relative definition, than how do we come up with a pejorative that accurately describes the inferior state of the French?
