My dad finally put some pictures up, or at least his realtor did...

Almost done, still needs the driveway paved.

Built it from the ground up, strictly to sell. Tore down another house to put this one up over it.

It'll be listed soon.

Beautiful details! love the exposed wood beams and the Mission style furnishings in the living room.

JB, is the house in Santa Cruz county? If so, did your dad have a hell of a time with the permits and planning department?

I'm not even going to ask what the house is being offered at... considering that the median price for houses in the Santa Cruz coastal area are selling at 435,000...

or a 2 bedroom shack with overgrown vegetation and mud/dirt drives ways and no view of the ocean sell for 300,000...

or a double wide mobile home sells for 125,000+

I'm comfortable with making the assumption that it's "alot"

ed.....I have a feeling you are way off on that price .......I am building a 3700 sq.ft. for $320,0000 here in austin.......my guess.....$750,000 to $850,000.......

Yea, but if you're selling it 'with' cuda then the price comes down considerably. :hehe:

My bad! I should have been more clear!

I meant that the "average" 3 bedroom family home is selling for 435k.

The Bressler Pad is a completely different beast. My guess... depending on proximity to the coast... 1.1 to 1.4 mil ?

It's in Soquel, not technically in the city limits of Santa Cruz (not incorporated?). I think it's on 2.5 acres and the house is 6800 s.f. (not counting the five car garage??).

It's probably about 7 miles from the last one he built, which I helped on (took 8 months out of college to do so). The last one was on the highest point in Santa Cruz, had 15 acres with it, and was I think 3500 s.f. (3 story victorian) with a 2400 s.f. garage/shop/guest house. He sold that to a retired Microsoft guy.

After he sold the first one, he got this land to start a project that would keep him in the area until my little brother graduated from high school. It's taken a lot longer than originally planned. When they first got the property the five of them basically lived out of the shack that was there previously, and a used motor home for over a year.

No, not the city limits of Santa Cruz... which is better. Soquel is a better location... higher property values, less traffic, and it doesn't have to live with so many of the psycho decisions that the marxist Santa Cruz city council comes up with.

(example: SC City council once passed an anti-discrimination "law" that said it was illegal fire or refuse to hire someone because they were ugly or had an "alternative" appearance.. IE: green hair and multiple facial piercings)

I'm not sure if the county of Santa Cruz has gotten any better with regards to developers and home owners but I remember back in the 90's the Planning Dept. was extremely anti-growth and anti-developer.

It's worse now, which continues to benefit neighboring communities like Soquel, Scotts Valley, Capitola, Aptos, etc, a lot.

Everytime the Santa Cruz City Council does something stupid, their neighbors make money.

Real good example is was an annual Naval event that Santa Cruz used to have. The Navy would bring a some ships into the harbor and they'd spend a whole weekend doing tours and whatnot. Vendors, fire departments, schools, churches would all have special sales and events (like pancake breakfast fundraisers, etc.) while the 'Navy was in Town'.

Then the city council decided to send a message by not allowing the Navy in the harbor anymore. So Capitola told them to come a couple miles down the beach. Now Capitola gets all that sales tax money, and their businesses reap the traffic, and guess what??? If you stand on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, you can still see the ships. There's your message dumbasses.

Santa Cruz's problem is a high proportion of college students at UCSC. A University that used to (still?) not even give actual grades because they hurt people's self-esteem.

On the first house we built, the County Sups tried to tell my Dad what color to paint the house, along with other provisions, like he needed to plant 'X' many of certain kinds of bushes, etc. They are almost as bad as the City Council.

The 4th of July Navy visits.... I remember that controvery. If I remember right.. the Navy was not invited for 3 or 4 years. I think one of the reason that the City gave was that the ship would disturb the wild life and fish in the bay.

Here's another bad one... Santa Cruz used to hold an annual fire works display on the 4th of J. They cancelled it as the 4th of July was a holiday that was based on the outcome of a war and war was bad. The city then changed the annual fire works display to celebrate the founding of Santa Cruz (some day in Spetember).

Well now, I've always found the folks around Santa Cruz to be a pretty down-to-earth, well-grounded, and overall swell bunch. Ah, here's a couple of 'em right now, hangin' out down at the Pacific Garden Mall.http://bushwhacked.net/forum/images/smilies/sm_hypnodisk.gif

The people are fine.. it's the city council that sucks. I can say that I was layed back.. never very down-to-earth or well grounded though. That must have been the West Santa Cruzans ;)

dude it is not uncommon...I have a client that builds house's for sale ....will live in them and start a new house or rent a house till he gets another built to sell......this last round was living in one and had one 1/2 finished and they both sold at the same time.....now he is renting....

For the most part, yes, the furniture goes with it. In fact, a great deal of the furniture, like by the fireplaces, is selected specifically to make the house 'show' better and in a few cases may be specifically designed for the house (one of a kind).

The stuff in the living room, by the big screen, is mostly junk. Will either go with Dad as temporary furniture in the next place, or me or my sister will get it. ;)

Is your dad a developer or an architect, or both?

Another link for real estate lovers with money,
here's one we designed last year, http://thearchitectsinc.tripod.com/website/id4.html
(the peach one, bottom page, not the blue one)
It has ocean view, infinity pool, very open and airy plan. After a hurricane you have to get all the fish out your pool. The site is a bit shabby but we're not finished yet.

Neither. He's an ex-LAPD (you'll find him mentioned in a couple Wambaugh books, and the Dirty Harry movies - Lt. Bressler) who's now a journeyman carpenter/amateur landscaper/tractor operator.

If you call developing one piece of property every five years or so a developer, I guess you could loosely say that.

The architect is a friend of the family, virtually a brother. He's designed the last two houses.

OK, who wants to come out/up for a Luau on July 12th?

Cooking an entire pig, underground. Will also be fish and either chicken or tri-tip.

Bring a sleeping bag or rent a hotel room somewhere in town.

Prolly looking at 70-90 people. Lots of nurses, lab techs, firemen, Bresslers, the architect.

Buh!

Yeah, I don't get that either. However, it looks like some of the decor is kinda that 60s-70's puke green stuff, and the kitchen looks real outdated. Maybe there's some rotting wood issues too (since it's so wet there), I will have to ask.
