Opening Day Exhibits for MIDWAY Underway
Museum planners have completed the storylines for the first exhibits planned aboard USS MIDWAY. Starting with just a vision, the group has developed renderings and storylines to support exhibit design and artifact acquisition. This process is supported by a stringent set of curatorial guidelines developed in part by the Naval Historical Center and the American Association of Museums. Volunteers are cataloguing artifacts and conducting research ensuring that these exhibits will be of the highest quality in content and execution.

Our aircraft collection will play a large part in many of these opening day exhibits by showcasing the "flight deck ballet", and explaining the inner workings of carrier aviation. Volunteers have recently completed restoration work on the Museum's Prowler A-6E. The Museum's F-4S and SNJ are next in line for restoration. We continue to search for colored shirt gear and other equipment to support our exhibit displays.

Vision for Opening Day Exhibit on America's Naval Legacy Begins to Take Shape
The story of the U. S. Navy begins with the struggles of the Continental Navy which not only had to fight the mighty Royal Navy, but political infighting, a shaky shore establishment, confused strategy, and above all, frequent displays of incompetence from its Captains. With one shining exception, the combat record of the new American navy's commanders was that of spotty success, tragic failure, and often, cowardice. The Navy's salvation came from a Scottish expatriot mariner who declined early offers of command to learn the specialized trade of sea fighting first hand, John Paul Jones.

Employing one of the largest collections of artwork on this era, MIDWAY's America's Naval Legacy will exhibit the surprising tale of the Navy in the Revolution, from General Washington's improvised cruisers to the actions of individual frigates, to a showcasing of John Paul Jones' American career including his apprenticeship on the Alfred, the daring successes on the Providence, the strange cruise of the Ranger, and his hard-won triumph on board the Bon Homme Richard. This exhibit on the ironic first chapter in our country's Naval history will highlight the long way our Navy has come not just in technology, but in a legacy of victory.
