WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 — Ratcheting up the debate over sport utility vehicles, new television commercials suggest that people who buy the vehicles are supporting terrorists. The commercials are so provocative that some television stations are refusing to run them.

Patterned after the commercials that try to discourage drug use by suggesting that profits from illegal drugs go to terrorists, the new commercials say that money for gas needed for S.U.V.'s goes to terrorists.

"This is George," a girl's voice says of an oblivious man at a gas station. "This is the gas that George bought for his S.U.V." The screen then shows a map of the Middle East. "These are the countries where the executives bought the oil that made the gas that George bought for his S.U.V." The picture switches to a scene of armed terrorists in a desert. "And these are the terrorists who get money from those countries every time George fills up his S.U.V."

A second commercial depicts a series of ordinary Americans saying things like: "I helped hijack an airplane"; "I gave money to a terrorist training camp in a foreign country"; "What if I need to go off-road?"

At the close, the screen is filled with the words: "What is your S.U.V. doing to our national security?"

The two 30-second commercials are the brainchild of the author and columnist Arianna Huffington. Her target audience, she said, is Detroit and Congress, especially the Republicans and Democrats who last year voted against a bill, sponsored by Senators John McCain, Republican of Arizona, and John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, that would have raised fuel-efficiency standards.

Spokesmen for the automakers dismissed the commercials.

Eron Shosteck, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, said of Ms. Huffington, "Her opinion is out-voted every year by Americans who buy S.U.V.'s for their safety, comfort and versatility." He said that S.U.V.'s now account for 21 percent of the market.

In an interview, Senator Kerry distanced himself from the commercials. He said that rather than oppose S.U.V.'s outright, he believed they should be more efficient.

"I haven't seen these commercials," he said, "but anybody can drive as large an S.U.V. as they want, though it can be more efficient than it is today."

Ms. Huffington's group, which calls itself the Detroit Project, has bought almost $200,000 of air time for the commercials, to run from Sunday to Thursday. While the group may lose some viewers if stations refuse to run the advertisements, the message is attracting attention through news coverage.

The advertisements are to be broadcast on "Meet The Press," "Face the Nation" and "This Week With George Stephanopoulos" in Detroit, Los Angeles, New York and Washington.

But some local affiliates say they will not run them. At the ABC affiliate in New York, Art Moore, director of programming, said, "There were a lot of statements being made that were not backed up, and they're talking about hot-button issues."

Ms. Huffington said she got the idea for the commercials while watchtors included Steve Bing, the film producer; Larry David, the comedian and "Seinfeld" co-creator; and Norman Lear, the television producer

Let's see what kind of car this stupid ***** drives around in. Does she ride in planes? They use a hell of a lot more fuel than my Cherokee. Limos?

I smell a big, fat hypocrite on this one.

I like the ads!

I'm not a big fan of SUVs... more so because there too damn big. I can't see over or around them, they typically drive too slow, and most... not all.. but most are too pretentious. Oh yeah.. they would squash me like a bug if we were to both try and occupy the same space and time slot. Besides, everyone has them (elitest mode off)

Sacramento is SUV central... I see so many in the daily commute and they always seem to have just one occupant. Small SUVs are fine... I like the Land Rover Discovery and the Jeep Cherokee (been driving a borrowed 2000 Cherokee around town for a couple of weeks... nice ride!) but the big behemoths seem to be used more for status and for guys with small dicks.

I know a girl.. she doesn't have a family and she doesn't go off roading and she went and got a Tahoe. It's too big for her to drive as she gets freaked out when it comes time for a U turn. Is she safe moving a two ton vehicle down the road?

I knew a guy who was a software engineer at Intel and he drove to work in a Ford F250 with four doors, long bed, and duallies. He lives in the damn suburb.. maybe he needs all that truck for when he has to drive over a curb to get to to the Taco bell drive thru?

Too many people have too many of these damn things and they simply don't need them.

A local writer for a small newspaper here in Sac wrote an article a couple of weeks ago where he tried to make the point that the 10 top gas guzzlers in the US were not SUVs/light trucks but were actually exotic european sportcars. He's actually right... the new $650,000 Enzo Ferrari gets 8 MPG city / 15 mpg highway. It is the biggest gas guzzler. so what... Ferrari is making 399 of these cars with 100 of the cars slated for the US. After the 399 are produced no more will be made. Tell me.. how many people are going to drive a 650,000 dollar car daily and how many of those 100 will drive more than 3000 miles a YEAR? very, very, very few.

He also brought up Lamborghinis and Aston Martins.. total imported to the US? About 1000 a year.

See, that's the problem. SUVs have horrendous gas consumption (but not the worse!) and about a 2 million a year are being produced and sold to the public. Of those 2 million.. how many are actually used for work and for the needs of a large family (or a large posse of friends if you're a rapper)?

Freedom of choice, Eddy. If you want one of the big vehicles, and can afford it, you are free to buy it. No one has the right to tell you you can't have it.

Status and safety are the biggest resaons that people buy these. If we can make a Ford Festiva a status symbol, then I am sure people would buy them. Personally, I like my Jeep, but when it dies I will probably get a Durango or a 4Runner. Those are both nice.

If I remember correctly, some big Greenpeace meeting was in New York a year or two ago, and a reporter watched what they all drove there in. There were a BUNCH of those Greenpeace whackos driving SUVs, and most of them drive there by themselves. They weren't trying too hard to save fuel. They are hypocrites. Al Gore says the internal combustion engine is the greatest threat to mankind, and rides in limos and SUVs everywhere he goes.

Car, trucks, station wagons, motorcycles, lawn mowers, vans and semi-trucks all use gasoline or oil related products. Why doesnt the ad include these other machines? Because these people really dont care about terror, they just care about getting rid of SUV's. The purpose of this ad is not to educate people on how SUV's indirectly fund terror, the purpose is to demonize.

Yes, the ads are meant to demonize SUV owners. The ads don't discuss the other vehicles because the other vehicles/machines don't use nearly the same amount of resources to be produced and to be run. Motorcycles are easily the best mode of transportation (on a sunny day!)... excellent gas milage, super duper fast performance, and very little reources to produce.

I don't have a problem so much with SUVs as I do with the amount of SUVs that are on the road. I clearly support Ferrari's intention to deliver a 220 mph super car that gets 8 mpg to the gallon. Now.. if Ferrari lowered the price and was able to produce and sell 30000 units a year (Annual Escalade production) then I'd say that's not too cool.

Of course, I would not back any law that regulates what you can and can't drive (though the f'in EPA does this already.. bastards). I still dont like the massive pieces of crap and I still favor european sports cars and american muscle.

Shotglass, that doesnt surprise me a bit regarding Greenpeace... they, like many liberal organizations, completely forget what their originals missions were once they get their hands on juicy juicy piles of cash that their naive members contribute to fight.. to fight... what does Greenpeace do these days???

You know... I shouldn't say I dislike all SUVs... there are a couple that I mentioned that I do like and I'd like to add one more. This one makes Suburbans, Excursions, Navigators, and Escalades look like Geo Metros.

Oh... and I think it was in production before the Hummer (correcto?)

Ladies and Gentlemen... I give you... the LAMBORGHINI LM002!!!!

(V12 Countach engine - 450 Bhp - 5900 Lbs curb weight - 0 to 60 in 8.5 sec., 126 mph top speed )

Oh yeah.. one of the options that Lamborghini offered on the LM002 was machine gun mounts on the back cargo area and roof... seriously.

I can't agree with anybody that would/can criticize SUV drivers (2nd worst drivers on the road) while not mentioning the ever dangerous and gas guzzling mini-van.

Mini-vans also side step the 27 mpg gallon standard for passenger cars while usually being driven by
a) soccer man with a cell phone who is not paying attention to the road
b) pussy whipped man who drives like a soccer mom
or
c) a teenage boy who is really pissed off he has to drive a mini van and squeals around every corner to protect his not yet matured testosterone.

Once we get minivans off the road then we can have a discussion on the limits of SUVs.

Word. ;)

I'll admit that I tend to slip minivans in to the SUV catagory because of the dreaded soccermom who's driving 30 mph in a 40 or 45 mph zone. Yeah, my peeved 'tude towards SUVs originally grew out of my frustration for minivans. White minivans. Wow.. I think I just had a special "insight moment" in to my psyche.

Eddy you must live right by me, because it is the same white mini-van with the pissed of teenager that's squealing by my house.

Do you think for a second, that these dogooder thought police will stop at SUVs? Once they taste success with their campaign they will start on sports cars then classics and not stop till they have us all driving Suzuki Mighty Boys!
I'll decide what I bloody well drive not some inner urban, vegetarian, chardonay sippin', tree huggin' self opinionated fuckwit!
You might wonder what an advertising campaign in the US has to do with an Aussie, well over here we have an organisation called "The Australian Pedestrian Council" and this band of fucking morons are campaigning to to ban 4WDs (what we call SUVs) these wankers don't need any encouragement!

By the way we call pickups: utilitys or ute's for short and we call minivans: people movers or spazzo buses, the latter term is politicaly incorrect but is my favourite!

try these sites for some information on how awfull the Suzuki Mighty Boy is:
