READERS of the normally highbrow political mag the New Statesman have been
spluttering into their cornflakes over a lurid column in the latest issue by
deputy editor Cristina Odone.
"A valet gave Prince Charles a blow-job," she begins (not the sort of language
you expect from a former editor of the Catholic Herald).
Odone goes on: "Or at least something along these lines apparently happened, if
we are to believe George Smith, the former royal valet who told Princess Diana
every gory detail of the seedy, scandalous excesses of Palace life."
Perhaps fearing being sent to the Tower, she goes on to qualify her initial
claim saying: "It might not have been Charles". But then drops herself right
back in it by suggesting the royal involved could have been "Randy Andy or
Philandering Phil or Three-in-a-Bed Ed".
So what does Prince Charles think? Will he sue? "I'm afraid we wouldn't have any
comment to make," says his press officer Patrick Harrison.
