Here is a great multiplayer game alert: Battlefield 1942 gets a thumbs up! There is a single player game that I haven't played. I've stuck with multiplayer at lunches with workfolk so far, and it is fun.

You get to choose from many maps of all kinds of locations like Market Garden, Wake Island, or Stalingrad. Depending on the map, you might find yourself in the uniform of Americans, the British, the Germans, the Japanese, or the Russians. All the voices are spoken in the appropriate languages.

Each time a side captures and holds a flag (by being in the vicinity of a flag until it converts), that point can be designated as a spawn point for future lives on your side.

You can spawn as any of various classes. Anti-tank guys have anti-tank rockets. Aim high, because all projectiles fall with gravity in realistic ballistic arcs. Engineers can lay anti-tank mines, set up dynamite, and repair vehicles with his handy wrench. There are assault guys, medics, and scouts too. Scouts can use binoculars to be forward observers for artillery strikes.

Speaking of which, vehicles are a big part of the game. Jump in a tank and have a buddy man the MG turret atop it, while you drive, swivel the main turret, and fire either the main gun at armor, or the forward mounted MGs at enemy personnel. The artillery is fun to fire from well away from the front lines in conjuction with a forward observer scout calling the shots.

Airplanes and ships are included. You could jump into a bomber, and have guys manning the little gun cupolas on the bottom and rear of the plane to fend off fighters. You can also bail out of an airplane and hit your parachute, allowing you to slowly drop behind enemy lines for risky but sneaky flag capturing.

Fly a fighter, drive a speedy jeep, man the gigantic guns on a battleship, or drive a destroyer. The freedom to approach situations in many different ways makes the game long lasting fun.

I hear this game kicks Major Butt!! (pun intended)

BUT you have to have a kick @ss video card for it to work. I downloaded the demo version, before the game was released but it failed to play on my system cause I have a crappy Dell onboard video card... so until I upgrade, no 1942 for me!

Mac?! HA!! I use a Mac at work, but I have a PC at home. Mac's kick ass, but as far as upgrading and gaming is concerned PC's rawk.

Once you buy a Mac, that's it, that's what you're stuck with. I just keep going to PC shows and upgrade as I see fit (and budget allows). They're actually really easy to piece together.

Might be better to wait though....

An Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) spokesperson confirmed Friday that reports the company will be slashing wholesale prices of its Pentium 4 processors are accurate.

Intel spokesperson Seth Walker told news sources that the Santa Clara-based chipmaker's "goal [is] to bring the Pentium 4 to all the key mainstream price points this year."

"One way to bring computer buyers into stores is to lower the bill of materials cost," said Walker.

Don't Shop Early

Prices for Pentium 4 chips are expected to drop on April 29th. Analysts estimate that the price cuts will average between 50 percent and 60 percent.

Perhaps most significantly, prices for Intel's newest chip, the 1.7-gigahertz Pentium 4, will drop from US$700 on its April 23 release date to $350 six days later.

Sources have said that Intel hopes to rekindle demand for its processors. The company has taken a beating recently as more PC and other digital device manufacturers have been forced to cancel orders for Intel's chips in the flagging economy.

Intel also wants its 1.7-gigahertz chip to be at a mainstream price point before the company introduces its highly-anticipated 2-gigahertz Pentium 4 later in the year.

By its fourth quarter this year, Intel would like to see computers with Pentium 4 processors priced as low as $999 for a PC and monitor. Presently, the lowest price for a Pentium 4 desktop system averages around $1,200.

Cuts Threaten Profits

An Intel spokesperson has asserted that the company cuts high-end processor prices on a regular basis in order to create demand for its products.

However, analysts across the board are concerned that the chip-making giant is taking a huge risk by following this strategy, especially given the depth of the projected price reductions.

"If average selling prices don't get cratered, I don't know how that's possible," Lehman Brothers analyst Dan Niles told The Wall Street Journal.

U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray analyst Ashok Kumar agreed with Niles' assessment.

"It is going to have a catastrophic impact on gross margins," Kumar said. "You're not going to see any seasonal pickup in demand."

Affecting Competitors

Intel is not the only chipmaker cutting its prices. Principal competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) cut prices of its processors last week, and apparently cut them again on Sunday.

Although AMD's 1.2-gigahertz Athlon chip has outperformed Intel's 1.5-gigahertz Pentium 4 chip at equal clock speeds, Intel's decision to slash its Pentium 4 prices will probably increase pressure on AMD, which prices its chips by their megahertz rating.

Kevin Krewell, an analyst with MicroDesign Resources, attributes the policy to what he calls "the magic of megahertz marketing."

According to Krewell and others, megahertz is one of the most important determinants to pricing, despite its being only one aspect of a chip's overall performance. That is why, Krewell said, AMD is forced to sell a superior product at a lower price to stay in the game.

"AMD is forced into a frequency match-up with Intel, which is beneficial to Intel," Krewell said. "It's very similar to what Intel did with the Pentium and [AMD's] K-5."

Intel is expected to release its first-quarter earnings on Tuesday.

this is a little off topic, but how does 1942 compare with MOHAA?

I am just finishing up MOH and thinking of checking out 1942...or I could dust off my still unopened Wolfenstein....

I have not played the single player 1942, but I have played the single player MOHAA, and loved it! The multiplayer is better, I hear, in 1942 than MOHAA, and I believe it.

But I have also heard that the AIs in single player 1942 are frustratingly stupid. They mill around, jump into and out of vehicles pointlessly, they don't respond to orders, and they are, in short, lame. Sounds like a person should get both games!

yep. That about sums it up.

I also hear an expansion pack for MOH is due to come out soon. Found BF1942 over the weekend, and can't wait to go online. Gotta get a little practice in first.

Yeah the singleplayer BF1942 is bad. The AI takes up all your system resources and you get HORRIBLE "lag". But go online and it's great. No real bugs, lots of fun.

*TIP* a bazooka or a panzerschreck hit to the direct rear of a tank will blow it up in one shot. So hide and wait for them to roll by before ambushing them.

Well... one could always install a GeForce4 MX in their G4 Mac if they were so inclined. (MX doesn't begin to touch the Ti capabilities.. but Ti should be available soon)

Cuda, not sure why you're saying that Macs can't be upgraded.. with the exception of alternative motherboards.. any other component can be upgraded. Besides, you get a fantastic version of FreeBSD to work with (though the OpenBSD variant is a bit more secure - out of the box.

I do have a PC.. but I only use it for video games ;)

Don't get me wrong Macs are way better than PC's. But it seems that PC's are more upgradable than Macs are (motherboards included). I too only use PC's for games.

Well, I did a little research and found out that Wolfenstien AND Medal of Honor are available for Macs!! Wonder if they can play online with the PC multiplayer people?

I was playing Wolfenstein and Soldier of Fortune 2 on my friends Dual 800 Mac (GeForce 4) and it kicked ass sooooo badly.

What's interesting is that in Quake 3 death matches the Mac has less frame drops and no redraw lags or "hiccups" that we seem to get on his P4 2 GHz box (GeForce 4 as well). It might be a thermal issue with the P4 processor.

To answer your answer though... yes.. you can join and participate on any server.

So what's the deal with flying in BF 1942? Can you configure a joystick to it? I can't seem to get the hang of it using my mouse and keyboard and some of these guys flying are pretty damn good if they're not using joysticks.

Is there a server we could all meet on once in a while? I'd really like to shoot some of you.

Wham Valdez
11-06-02, 06:38 PM
Of course you can use a joystick, you just have to configure it in the options. Unfortunately, I rely on the keyboard to fly so I dunno how to configure it properly.

As for servers, I just randomly pick servers by ping and I usually play CTF maps.

And oh yes, it would be very nice meeting you guys on the battlefield. Whenever I see Cuda driving a jeep, I would aim my tank fire next to it so the explosions would cause him to roll it ahhahahahah...erm...uh, yeah.

Eddioboy

I play on a LAN, and don't think I would have the connection speed for internet games.

One night people here went out to Target and got themselves some joysticks just for BF 1942. I didn't, just because I'm not that dedicated, and I'm content with the infantry.

It is MUCH easier to fly with the joystick. Much. It makes flying fun. It even makes me wonder if I should go get a joystick too. BTW, you can use the arrow keys instead of the mouse, but that still isn't very fun.

Bring it on Wham!!! I like running over canucks in my jeep. I also like sinking landing crafts just as they're about to hit the beach
