View Full Version : College Football Pick'em

Is there enough interest to have our own group within the ESPN weekly college football picks? If so, we could also set up our own group for the NFL, NBA, & college hoops when they start.

The college pick'em contest starts next week & rather than run a poll to determine the interest, I will list the link where you set yourself. When it list "join a group", enter Bressler.org.asm,
password "bushwhacked".

http://games.espn.go.com/cpickem/frontpage

Who knows, maybe JB$ will offer 1 forum point to the winner for each week, & 5 pts for the season winner.  Or maybe not:worthy:

The scoring format is without the line,(heads up), & points received are figured off the percentage of players taking each side. For instance, if 70% take the favorite, but you take the dog & it wins, you get 70 points, whereas had you taken the favorite & they won, you would have gotten 30 pts.

Anybody interested?

If at least 10 members of the board play:

1 forum point for each week's winner.

1 forum points for season winner (of course, these will not apply until next year's Forum Championship)

Rguess21 is in charge of making sure I know who the winners are.

Carry on...

I may join. Is this a week by week contest or pick a whole season?

Rguess21

Come on Wrecker. It is scored weekly for 14 weeks, starting Aug 31st. The games are posted on Monday, & you must have your picks in before the kickoff of the 1st game listed for that week. (Usually Saturday 11 am CDT, but some weeks will have a Thursday night game).

Ty, the tie breaker is just closest to the final score of the last game listed each week, just incase all 15 picks that week were the same.

JB$, will be glad to keep you posted on the results, especially since I can rest assured that whomever wins that week or is season leader is bound to post some chin music on this thread. :hehe:

Best of all:

1. This is a FREE game, no fantasy charges involved.
2. You can spend as little (TIME) as 3 or 4 minutes a week, or as much time as you want.
3. & now.... FORUM POINTS :!!!:

No wrecker, there's no way of knowing which 15 games are going to be used each week, but if you miss one week, it doesn't eliminate you from the rest of the season, etc.

OK PEOPLE, we have 8 entries in the contest, need 2 more for bressler forum points. The points aren't any big deal (can I say that & not have the board nazi come down on me?), but I just can't believe there aren't more than 8 of us interested in college football.

If you are concerned about this taking up too much time, it doesn't. You will spend more time entering the contest than you will the rest of the 14 week season. Each week all you have to do is check one side of 15 pre determined games, along with your guess for the final score on the last game listed.

If your concern is looking like you don't know whats whats in the college game, the points you receive on a win are based on what percentage of all 65,000 plus entries took the other side of each game. You could pick 1/3 rd's of the games right, and if they were big underdogs, very well still win our group. & on the flip side, you might pick 2/3 rd's right, but just be in the middle of the pack if they were all favorites. Plus, it shows you the % all week long, for instance Washington will yield 62.5 pts when they beat Michigan this week, who 62.5% of the entrants have picked. (Michigan, of course, would yield 37.5 points-if they could win). All games are heads up, no vegas spread involved.

First game kicks Saturday at 11am, so get in today or tomorrow, so you don't have to make up all the points you didn't get by waiting until the 2nd week.

ESPN also has the same contest for the pro's, but doesn't look like there will be enough interest to try to start one for that.

If you have any other concerns, feel free to post or IM me, & in these people are the only ones interested-that's great too. Good luck to Jimmy Eat World, Ty, JDub, San Clemente Baer, Nau, & JHans. :D Oh, ya, & you too, JB$

The bressler 9 did better than average on the first week of the college football contest, averaging 257 points compared to the espn average of 222. :)

The games are up for the 2nd week, don't forget to mark you picks, as well as the final score for the last game listed each week. (This week it's the Florida-Miami game)

Also, any of the 9 entrants, you might want to check the bressler.org.asm bulletin board, since the mud slinging has already begun.

Anyone else wanting to join, feel free to jump in anytime. The contest is open until the last week, but every week you wait puts you farther behind in the overall standings even though you would be on equal footing for each indivual week.

Lastly, is there enough interest to start a group for the NFL season? I don't figure there was since we only had nine in this contest, but if there is we need to get it set up before the Thursday night kickoff. I set up the same group name & password (bushwhacked) just incase. http://games.espn.go.com/cgi/home/Request.dll?FRONTPAGE
The NFL contest is listed as PIGSKIN PICKEM.

Sounds like you're trying to start a rumor. Let me tell you something and I want you to listen to me. I did not have sex with that woman. Oh wait, I mean I categorically deny entering mhansberger into this pool. He did so on his freewill. I would never tarnish the name of my brother by entering him in a pool a week late just so he could remain in last place behind me. Anyways, even if I would have done that, which I didn’t, he is playing for himself now anyways.

jhans
09-16-02, 05:01 PM
Mhans was a sharp cookie this week. He picked Penn over Nebraska. How about Cal though? Both Mhans and myself picked Cal over Michigan State. The Pac 10 is looking solid. If Washington St. would have beaten Ohio St. I think it would have been clear that the Pac 10 is the strongest conference. I heard Lee Corso (sic?) say that the Big 12 is the strongest but I'm not so sure about that. While the conference has some depth, the Marquee teams have had some questionable performances. Colorado lost to Colorado St. and got beat at home by USC. If it wasn’t for the last second fumble recovery and runback against Alabama, Oklahoma would already have a loss against the only quality team Oklahoma played. Nebraska got beat by Penn State. Texas seems like they should be solid but they haven’t played a good team yet and they won’t for four more weeks. Overall, I think that Texas deserves their ranking until proven otherwise but Oklahoma should not be included in the top 5. Personally, I think that seven of the top 10 ranked teams would beat Oklahoma if they got to play them this week. Hmmm…. this sounds like a good pole question.

Congrats to Wrecker for setting a new bressler hi for a total in one week with 627. He missed the top 50 leaderboard for week 6 by a mere 39 pts, not bad considering there are 166,001 entries in this year's college contest.

"Whatcha'll want me ta sing this here fur? What, is this evil?........................... What in da wurld does that mean?

I laugh my arse off everytime I listen to that when I dig it out this time of year. But, like the man said; come this Friday, 11:30

"...good bye ta texas university of Texas, good bye ta urange & the white, lawd"....
"the eyes of Texas is upon you, yes lawd, that is the song they sing so well. It sound like hell :!!!: ......

This being the only game I ever pull against the University of Texas, er I mean, texas university, allow me to say just two more words... GIG'EM AGGIES

Oh my sweet Lord, RGuess!:( You gonna start with this noise already??:D I didn't think I'd have to deal with too much of this until I went home tomorrow. You and Ty are starting to get my blood up on this Aggie thing. I think the aggies got a better chance of gigin' a frog than gigin' the Longhorns.:D That rendition of the Aggie War Hymn was outstanding, though...I bet I've sent it to 100 people already. Quality stuff.;)

Hell, JDub, with the line being tu-13.5, that shows me, from my decades of sports betting, er, following sports, that TAMU doesn't have but about a 1% chance at best, of even showing up on the field. Had the line been in the 7 to 11 range, that would indicate they had a chance for the upset, or atleast a respectable showing. Having said that, I know I've got to get my chin music in now, because I wont be able to "sing" after the game. I still hate the way the TT-ut game unfolded, well, except for my pocketbook. :hehe:

GIG'EM:thumbsup:

If anybody else would like me to e-mail them the hilarious version of the Aggie War Hymn, just let me know. In fact, JB, if you would like to proof it, give me a hollar, you may want to post it in you audio files on the home page, cause it is tear'n up humorous, whether your interested in football rivalries or not. And speaking of lines, looks like ou will kill Okie St, but it appears the big "upset" just might be NEBRASKA beating Colorado outright, since it's a 1 pt line. That has trap written all over it !!! JMHO, why do ya think they call it gambling. ;)

& thanks Stibroker, I've already sent that post to my poor Aggie graduate.

Yeah JDub we know the history. I'm not expecting the Aggies to win but I root for them anyhow. Bevo Burger anyone? Sometimes you just have to go with the better team instead of the one that always wins. :hehe:

Ya Freak, Colorado is favored by 1, which looks like an excellent profit opportunity for the sportsbooks in Vegas. But then you have unforeseen injuries, etc. come into play, so, as always, it's no sure thing.

Stardust line from Vegas.

Congrats to all the college football players, as the regular season has come to an end. Prorating the one player who couldn't pick every week, Wrecker won this year's contest with a projected score of 4853 putting him in the top 1000. Thanks to all that played, & I hope you found it interesting as well as enjoyable.

If there is enough interest, irregardless of whether you participated in this contest or not; I'd be happy to get up a group for the college bowl season tourney. :)

You and Jimmy Eat World kicked ass on that. 99.4%?! That's amazing. What is your final rank?

I've scored you as winner of the Forum Point for the season. If you don't want it, it'll pass on to Jimmy Eat World.

Although Wrecker did great, and he has an awfully good reason to stop playing, he didn't finish in my book and lasting the whole season is half the challenge.

Ok, I'll take 'em. Hey, by the way, what about 2 pts for every 10 players in the bowl tourney as an incentive? Maybe we can get 20 players since it just spans about 3 weeks. I'm pretty sure that would lure Freak in.
