<b>This thread is for forum members to share their Photoshopping techniques. If you want to learn how to make certain effects or mask those pictures better (*hint*) this is the place to ask.
============================================</b>
Hopefully, the Bressler.org Photoshop is not just a place to post your work, but a place where you might learn a few things and get better at it.
There's always room for improvement, even among the best, and there's nothing worse than seeing a picture from someone whose been doing this a long time... that makes you grimace in pixelated horror. OK... maybe there are a few worse things.
Anyhow, ask away. Below are some links to tutorials that can be very helpful.
<b><u>Photoshop Tips & Tutorials</u></b><ul><li><a href="http://user.fundy.net/morris/redirect.html?photoshop14.shtml" target="_blank">GFX Tutorials</a></li><li><a href="http://www.deepspaceweb.com/sections.php" target="_blank">Deep Space Web Tutorials</a></li><li><a href="http://www.arraich.com/ps_intro.htm" target="_blank">Jay Arraich's Photoshop Tips</a></li><li><a href="http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/photoshop/index.html" target="_blank">The Guru's Network Tutorials</a></li><li><a href="http://www.designsbymark.com/pstips/index.shtml" target="_blank">DesignsByMark.com</a></li><li><a href="http://janeecake.home.att.net/tutorials.htm" target="_blank">Janee's Photoshop Tutorials</a></li></ul>
<b>P.S.</b> This thread is basically the same as the old <a href="http://bressler.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1650">"Photoshopping Tutorials & Whatnot"</a> thread, but it's been renamed so as not to confuse any French people or those afflicted with the dreaded Attention Deficit Disorder.

:nolike: Wow, thanks for the recognition, JB.
What is motion tweening? Does that help keep animated filesizes down?
Hmmm....I figured one of the animators would answer this.
Motion tweening is essentially taking frame one with your object in one location going to say frame 24 and moving your object into another location and the software fills in the objects motions between frames 1 and 24. I'm not so sure it makes it smaller but it can make your movements smoother between frames.
It just keeps you from having to go to frame 2..move a little bit...got to frame 3, move again etc etc. You just place a keyframe at the beginning and one at the end (depending on the software)
and then do motion tweening between frames.
I only have animation experience with Lightwave so I someone else may have another take on this.

how do I cut and paste..or trace and cut and save with no background..this cloning is killing me...
There's several ways to do that...(I use Photoshop)
Sometimes I use the pen tool and make an outline with points around the object, copy that onto a new layer then use the eraser to clean up the edges.
Sometimes I use layer masks and the magic wand to select areas.
Other times I just use the eraser around the edges and get rid of what I don't want. It all depends on the amount of detail of the object I'm trying to pull out of the picture.
More often than not I use the magic wand to erase the larger areas I don't want to keep. Setting the pixel radius to higher numbers allows you to select larger areas with similar pixel colors.
But the bottom line is..its work no mattter how you look at it.
Stibroker..I know you're using Jasc7 so I'm not familiar with the tools and procedures using that software but I think they're similar to PS.
Sideout is a master of layer masks. Perhaps he will share some of his techniques using that?

I can tell you that as far as photoshop goes, when you open an image such as a jpeg, it places it in the background layer and has no transparency. I like to sellect all and cut the image, then paste it into a new layer above the background. Then you can use either the eraser method or layer masks to get rid of the unwanted parts of your image. Instead of getting rid of that background layer, I like to fill it with all white. Then I make another layer (under the image) and fill it with all black. While you're erasing, you can toggle between the black or white background underneath to make sure you're getting all the edge pixels (if your subject has a dark background, the white will show leftover dark pixels and if it has a light background, the black will show leftover light pixels).
The advantage to using layer masks over erasing is that you can easily 'paint' part of the image back into view if you decide to move it or erase too much. It's pretty simple in photoshop - but that can be for another post ;)
A couple of things I ALWAYS do...
Start with the biggest image you can. Its easy to go smaller. Getting bigger always presents problems with resolution.
Always save a .psd. Especially before merging layers etc.
As Sideout said..save a copy of the original to another layer.
I always start with a big blank picture too. Normally 800x600 then I use the crop tool once I have everything placed where I want it. Then I use the image size to size it for submittal to the board.

There's at least four ways to pull one image out of another in Photoshop, and each one seems to be best for certain images. You guys already mentioned three which were:
1) trace it with a contrasting color,
2) trace it with the background eraser,
3) use the magnetic lasso, or pen tool, in combination with 1&2.
One that you didn't mention was the Photoshop Extract tool.
The Extract tool is a little more complicated to explain than the others, but in a lot of instances I think it's better and faster. I didn't want to try to explain it, so I found this tutorial.
http://www.soniacoleman.com/Tutorials/PhotoShop/Extract_Object/Method4/method4.htm
Like I say though, it's not always the best. I think it does real good on items that are really fine, or are semi-transparent (like the hair example, or trees and whatnot). It does not do good on low-quality images.
Also, after you've made a new layer with your object (always make a new layer), if it's still a little rough (has background color remnants) you can use the 'defringe' or 'remove black/white matte' commands. This'll get rid of the little off-color edge pixels.
In Photoshop that's in the Layer menu, not sure where it is in others but I'm pretty sure they have one.
Photoshop 7
Thumbs Plus
and a bunch of PS plugins.
Stibroker,
If you're trying to get rid of the sky for example I sometimes use the magic wand then use the "select similar" from the pulldown and that will catch all those peices the magic wand missed.
Problem: Select Similar will select those in the whole picture. so if there's any colors in the rest of the picture similar to the sky it selects those too. But it works great on some images and is fast.
There's a lot more funtionality to these tools than I'm writing. As JB mentioned with the Extract it can get pretty complicated.
My typing is horrible....

How do I create smoke in Photoshop? Hope it's easy cause I aint real familiar with all the stuff. I also have Paint Shop Pro 7.
Like a smoke trail off of a missile or rocket....
Thanks

Mongoose - I think one of the tutorials at the beginning might have something about making smoke - if not there, I know I've seen a good one somewhere and if I remember where, I'll post it. What I would do in PS is make a new layer, then use a paintbrush and make a few wavy lines coming off of your source (rocket or whatever) using white or grey depending on what color smoke you want. Then I'd change the opacity of the layer to 60% or so to give it some transparency (slider at the top of the layers pallette). Finally, to make it look like smoke, i'd use the blur filter and especially the smudge tool (the finger) to smudge and blur your lines into something that looks hazy like smoke - just play around with the smudge tool until you get the look you want. An alternative is to use the airbrush tool on a really low pressure setting (like 5-10%) but I think you'll get better results smudging.
enjoy

Here's a link to some great PS tutorial sites.
http://www.freewebz.com/mastodon/ps_links.html
Mongoose, on that site go to the "tutorial find" site and search on smoke. A couple of tutorials are there on how to make smoke.
It definately takes work but Sideout gave some good tips to use.

I have a question on replacing colors. (PS)
I wanted to replace the flesh colors on Eagles face with the whale color so it would blend in. (see suicide) I was able to select all the flesh tones from his face but I was not able to sample the whale color on another layer. Either that or I'm not getting how the replace color works. I was also able to select all the flesh tones with select similar but I can't seem to get how you sample another layer and replace it on the selected area.
Anyone got any helpful tips on that?
shotglass

You have to make the layer you're sampling from/replacing active. Make your selection on the top layer, then switch to the background layer to sample your replacement color. Then switch back to the top layer and replace.

Thanks Shotglass but how do you do that with the replace color requester open? With that window open it would only let me work on one layer. Maybe I just screwed up. I'll try it again tonight.

STIBROKER and some others have asked about the invisible plane I did for The Buzz with Eagle3 - http://bushwhacked.net/forum/showthread.php?postid=31906#post31906
Well, it took awhile, but it's not too complicated:
Using Photoshop 6
1. select and copy the plane (just a rough cut) and paste it onto a new layer - then hide that layer for later use.
2. remove the plane from the background - mostly using the rubber stamp tool (one of my favorites) to duplicate parts of the barn and grass to cover the plane. I did have to do some copy and pasting to add more tree and stuff - I had to make the pic wider so wonder 'woman' wouldn't block any of the plane.
3. next, make the plane visible and create two new layers on top of that one.
4. on the first one, I used the pen tool to outline the plane in a path, then chose to convert the path to a selection and filled it with all white. Changing the opacity of that layer to about 25% gives you the see-through look and little bit of hazy white.
5. on the top layer (hide the white fill layer temporarily) I took a white paintbrush and outlined the major lines of the plane - one tip, if you click the paintbrush (or any other tool) in one location then hold down shift and click in another location it will make a perfectly straight line between the two points.
6. Make the white layer visible again and delete the one with the actual plane on it.
find a suitable pic of wonder woman on google and slap eagle's face on it (don't forget the headset!) and there you go.
Enjoy

This is an Imageready question.....
How do you make an object/layer come in from the outside of the viewing area? I'm trying to make a hand come in from off frame but whenever I do that it says layer empty. I can free transform it in PS but imageready doesn't seem to know it's there if I place it outside the picture.
huh? need more info.
- If you're doing what I think you're doing, you should have it on a separate layer.
- If you do have layers, make sure you're on the right layer.
- If you're going to transform it, you're going to have to copy it and work in separate layers. (pain in the ass)
Cuda..I'm trying to do something similar to what you did with the dangerous beach pic (bringing the sign in) . I need a hand to come in from offscreen touch something then go back off screen.
If I move the hand off the canvas suddenly imageready doesn't think there's anything there anymore. I'll try some other things
and see if I can't find out where I'm screwing up.
Nevermind...I figured it out..Bwahahahahahahahah:hehe: :hehe:

Do we have any Corel PhotoPainters here?
Corel is my weapon of choice.
I recently acquired Photoshop 7
but am not familiar with their tools yet.
Is there any other tool in photoshop to mask images other than the magic wand and lasso? Photopaint has a brush that allows you to mask images but I have yet to find one in PS. Of course, I haven't spent ALOT of time with PS yet...
oh also, what exactly is considered a "SUICIDE" photoshop image? Is it because it contains a member of this board's image? as in the suicide threads??

How do you get the banner icons at the bottom of the message screen under the pictures, like BRESSLER.ORG and ASS KISSER and all the other's that get posted?
JBMoney
09-15-02, 11:24 AM
'ASS Kisser' is a post icon. You would select that from the list of 30 post icons that display every time you make a thread, or reply. That'll show up before any text in your message.
Mongoose's 'bressler.org' banner is a signature line that uses a picture instead of text. You can set your signature line in your control panel.
You can set a signature line to automatically show up below your text in EVERY message, or NOT to show up. In either case, there is an option box below every new thread/reply form that allows you to enable it, or disable (depending on your settings) every time you post.
If you are going to use a sig pic, make sure it's moderate size and is reliably hosted. Quite a few people here still use modem. Also, for threads that are already image intense, I would recommend only using a sig pic in your first post on the thread.

The 'login' is at the bottom of the Forum Main page (the two form fields).
You should not be able to post as 'guest' ANYWHERE on this board except 'Fight Club'. If you were able to do that, I'd be interested to know where. In any other forum, if you try to post as guest, it should take you directly to a login page.
As Ty said, if you have cookies enabled, which you do, you should never need to login again unless:
1) You log out.
2) You delete all your cookies, or allow an application like 'Window Washer' to automatically delete them for you (or lose them in some other fashion).
3) If it was a 'server thing', the Forum changed servers, or there was a huge overhaul of the Forum application. In both cases, everyone would have the same short-term problem.

I just started to fool with PS6 and don't understand the text section. I type the text and there are 3 different selections under "Create As":vector, selection, floating. I went through all the combinations but the text doesn't appear on the picture, except for a fractured, blinking one. Just a frame is there. I try to move the text but the main edit window keeps popping up when I click on the frame. :what:

I don't know what photo software you're using but there should be a "size" button or tab. If there is, while your picture is up, click on the button and set the size in pixels (for true size) and when you "save as" for a JPG, or other formats, there should be an image quality selection. The lower the quality, the smaller the file size. I hope this helps.

One more thing. BMPs are killer large files sometimes. If your pictures are BMPs, save them back as JPGs.

As mentioned earlier, saving as jpeg is an excellent idea. Also, if you don't plan on printing your photoshop creation you want to save it optimized for web. Under the File menu select "Save for web..". That will make the file size very small and still look fine on a computer screen.
Jillamanda, what graphics program(s) do you have?

How do I paste a animated gif on a still background and save it so the animated part still works? I have PSP6 and have tried 87a & 89a "save as" gif formats but am always told it will be saved as a single layer. So of course, the animated part doesn't work. I've used JPG backgrounds and GIF backgrounds. Nothing works. This should be simple.
Now please no-one laugh but I got "ArcSoft Photostudio" with my scanner.I can't drive it yet but it seems to have some of the functions you have been talking about.
Does anyone know this program ?Is it worth persevering with or should I just get photoshop?
:( I use MSPaint mostly...
This is a decent, affordable graphics program. It's got a 20 day free trial:
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3000-2192-10137356.html?tag=lst-0-1
Pete...
I don't know a lot about ani's too much, but if I were to do it, my ani program separates each frame, you can paste on the background image and then ani the whole thing...In photoshop you press alt or shift when pasting to go to a locked position or something.
OK That didn't make a bit of sense...

Pete, open the animation up in ImageReady. It will display all the frames. Then you should be able to add your still to the frames of the animation from Photoshop.
I just got a copy of Microsoft's Digital Image Pro. Has anyone used this? I have dinked around with it a little bit but it doesn't seem to have the flexability that Photoimpact does. An example would be that I can't find a way to erase bits of the active image (this is very annoying). The layout is very smooth and windows friendly (as I would expect from Microsoft) but to the degree that it is too smooth. So for now I have shelved it until I get the gumption to have a go at it again.

Well since I can't Email or PM you, I'll put it here and move this later.
It's not that I don't like it, and it has nothing to do with work safe issues, but on graphically intense threads (e.g., Photoshop and Grotto) we've always privately discouraged folks from using large sig pics. So, the informal rule is to only use it on your first post for those threads (unless it's real small). Some folks have a hard enough time as it is just downloading the photoshops (some are still on modems). Its a bit of a distraction even if you have a lot of screen.
Also, we always give folks grief for using sig picks that are large (some will vouch for that I'm sure). I hate to set a limit on it but folks have used sig picks that are greater than 200 pixels high before, so we had to draw a line at 100 pixels high (which is still a lot). Keep in mind that around 45% of people still use 800x600 and it eats a lot of their real estate.
The other issue was I'd like you to get me a 88x31 banner to link to your site from the main page.. and do you want it to link to your home, or the radio stations?
That is all.
Carry on.

Actually, it would be ideal if you would link to /mainpage.html, since all the site's content can be reached from there.
Some Animated GIFs as well as some full size banners I made can be found here (http://www.hiphopphenomenon.com/hiphopphenomenon.html), or by going to the front page and clicking "What you want."

Well, I have a version of Adobe that's not even supported by the factory anymore: Adobe Photo DeLuxe 1.0
If I need B&W, or sepia tones, I do the conversion to B&W first and then play with the contrast and brightness and then add some yellow and maybe red, if I need to, to get the brown tones I need. I plan the buy Adobe Photoshop 7.0 after I get through having my transmission rebuilt, if there's anything left to buy it with.
I've always made do with whatever I could find and just fool with it till I get it's the way I want it. Whether it's the photos or something around the house. Sometimes, it's a real pain in the ass, but with photos it can be fun. ;)
Something else. I've done oil paintings, so that's given me insight to blending colors. But with paintings, you most times only get one chance to get it right or the entire picture can be a waste.

Anyone know the easiest way to isolate colors in Photoshop? I can't figure the dang thing out. Now I make a new layer and manually paint inthe new color, changing opacity as needed. There has to be an easier way, I just don't see it.
Here is what I want to do: Say I have a colorful, high res picture of my son wearing a blue shirt. what I want to end up with is the same picture, in greyscale, but the shirt still blue.
Any help would be appriciated.

Freak, try Image/Adjustments/Replace Color... You use the eyedropper to select a color from the image...then change the 'fuzziness' slider to include a wide range of similar hues or a vary specific hue...then make your adjustments...use Hue to totally change a color, use saturation and lightness to vary the look of the new color.
Hope that helps you out.
-SO
so you would replace all the other colors wit grey tones except the one you want to isolate?
Sideout
05-29-03, 11:00 AM
which ever color you select is the one the adjustments apply to...so say you had a blue car on green grass and you wanted to make the car red without changing anything else...you'd choose Image/Adjustments/Replace Color, then click on the blue part of the car to select it. Change the fuzziness slider to make sure you get all the shades of blue but not any of the green or anything else, then adjust the hue to the red range...then fool with the saturation and lightess until it looks good. This works better in some situations than in others, but it does come in handy.

 Sorry freak - for some reason I never made it to your second paragraph...
anyhoo - one quick way you can do it is to use the lasso and select roughly around the shirt, copy it and paste it onto a new layer - on the orignal layer use Image/Adjustments/Hue & Saturation to set the color saturation to nothing - effectively grayscale - then on the shirt layer, just clean up your edges with the eraser or layer mask so only the shirt is on the color layer.
If the area you want is a nice clear area, you can use the magic wand to select the area you want to stay color, go to Select/Inverse to select everything but that area and adjust the saturation to nothing.
hope that helps...more than my other help that is :what:

PHOTOSHOP DEATH!!!!
Suddenly Photoshop will not load. I get a blank gray screen and the little hourglass thing. It sits like this and won't load the rest of the program.
I tried rebooting, no change.
I tried defragging, no change.
I have not installed any new programs or made any changes that would conflict.
The version I am using is Photoshop 7.0.1. on Windows 2000.
Do you have a scanner attached to your system that's not on? I had a problem once where the system had not yet recognized my scanner after booting up. When I tried to load PS7 I thought the program had hung but eventually complained that the TWAIN device could not be found. It gave me the option to continue without it.
If this isn't your problem try cleaning out your temp folder.
my wife burnt out a RAM stick...she had enough to do windows and a couple other things like surf the net, but it wouldnt load photoshop...I didn't get past the splash screen.

Welcome to Bressler, randogg187.
Go to "Image" then "Rotate Canvas" then "Flip Horizontal". That will get you a mirrored image.
That's how it works in Adobe, anyway.

Yes, but that will do the whole image (all layers). If you only want to flip the top layer and not the background, select that layer, then choose Edit/Transform/Flip Horizontal.

I've read this thread through several times, and I bought a book while my computer was in getting fixed. Least now I'm not so lost!
Visual QuickStart Guide Photoshop for Windows and Macintosh published by Peachpit Press. http://www.peachpit.com
I think it is a great book. Cost was $38.95 plus tax CDN. Now, I've scanned the book, came back and re-read this thread, and read the book again thoroughly.
Still waiting for the program, tho. My ex did promise me a copy a week or so ago, so I am waiting. I'm looking forward to trying out the tutorials y'all have posted. Thanks! :D
Now, my requisite dumbazz question: There is a chapter on ImageReady, which refers to it as PS's sister program. Is this included in certain versions (sorry, I couldn't tell from the book), or is it a separate entity? It says that is what you should use for printing Web-specific images.
As well, I have finally got my hoster's site back. Truly, I searched in here so as not to ask yet another dumbazz question. Are y'all using Irfanview? For some reason, it wouldn't work for me.
So, how do y'all get your pics posted? Do you have your own host, then link them to here?
Sorry, I'm trying.
D@mn, I wanna get into Suicide! :hehe: :hehe:
Sideout

ImageReady is a separate application that comes with PS 5 (I think) and higher. It is used for preparing pictures and animations for the web. You really won't need to worry about using it though, because inside Photoshop, you may use the Save for Web... option under the file menu. This option basically uses ImageReady's functionality and saves the image in a web-friendly JPG format while first allowing you to change the quality slider and preview the image and the filesize. An added benefit is that Save for Web... saves a copy in JPG format, it does not make any changes to the orginal PS document.
As for your second question - some of us have images hosted on our own sites and link to them, but most of the time we just attach them to our replies as we post. You are limited to 500 (600?) pixels in width and 125K in file size (remember that quality slider? This is why you use it) but that's not usually a problem.
Enjoy,
-SO

Ok, I was worried that ImageReady was a separate program. Like I said, it doesn't specify that in the book. Shoulda bought Photoshop for Canadian Dummies, eh? :hehe: :hehe:
I do understand about sizing and bandwidth. I was just wondering how y'all got your pics up. Was getting frustrated, because I couldn't get back to my hoster's site, and there are pics I'd like to post. And I didn't want to impose on anyone to ask them to host my pics.

I bought Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book. It's great. It explains how to do this stuff and also comes with a tutorial cd that you load onto your computer with classes to teach you hands on how to do different applications. I've still got a lot to learn, but it's a good place to start. My book is full of sticky notes on different things and highlights on things I want to remember. I think the cost on it was about $40.00.

12-16-03, 06:08 AM
Sorry, I didn't get back to you sooner, Jasmine. That does sound like a good book. There was so many at the store, and I just asked one of the reps to recommend one.
One question though: Was there any time limit on the CD? The reason I ask is because I had to learn MS Project (for construction planning and scheduling) and the CD that came with the book was only good for 30 or 45 days, can't remember.
*I dunno where this ex is with my copy of PS. Looks like I'll have to buy it myself anyway*
JasmineDreamz
12-16-03, 03:25 PM
If I remember right there was no expiration date on it. It was lessons you download from the cd to your computer and you pull up each lesson to use as you please. There was no registration code to put in for the lessons. It was copyrighted 2002 and I bought it in 2003. I started them around the first of the summer and I can still pull up each lesson and redo them if I want, or pull up the ones I haven't finished yet ( ) and work on them. I need to redo lesson 13 and there are a total of 18 lessons. When I bought PS 7.0 there was no instructions or on-line support with it. It was on sale and that was all I got, so the book and CD lessons have been a God send.

Where's the Doh! smiley?
I had some pics saved to my hard drive, using the program that came with the printer (Corel Print House/Corel Photo House) Unfortunately, I then installed a trial copy of Jasc Paint Pro 7. This has expired. There was no uninstall feature. Now I'm being told I have no access to these pics.
It's not a big deal to resave these pics as I did originally, but why would the Jasc software take over my pics? I don't recall using it for anything. :what:
Ah well, back to square one again.
Barb101
01-26-04, 07:32 PM
Looks like your pic files were associated with Jasc when you installed it. Try going to the folder you saved those pics to through windows explorer. Right click and go to 'open with' & associate it with another graphic program you have installed.
Or open one of your graphic programs you use & then preferences/properties & assoc. the graphic files you want with it.

OK, I went to the control panel and removed Jasc and rebooted. Then I did what you said with the "Open with". Let's see if I can load a pic to the pet's thread. Thanks, Barb! ;) :D

Close but no cigar. Will a pic normally show up when you preview your post? I'm just getting the dreaded lil red x in a box.
Prolly got the URL wrong or something.
Barb101
01-26-04, 09:42 PM
Are you trying to upload an image or are you linking to one?
I don't know if John has a hack that stores attachments in a database in the preview mode. You will probably have to re-attach the file before you actually submit it if you went to preview mode first. If using a url to link an image it should show up once you hit reply also.
Someone else may tell you different.

I finally got back to my hoster's site, and was planning on using that to post any pics of mine. I don't quite understand the "attachment " feature; at any rate, I thought I did it right but
So then I typed in the url.jpg . I usually try to preview my posts when I'm using different fonts or posting links, just to make sure they are working. I may just have the address off a little.
I do realize, that when you quote someone (to see how they are doing theirs), no information for the image comes up, just the text. I'm assuming it would be ridiculous, and a huge waste of bandwidth, to have the image appear for every function on this board. So that's why the question about preview.
Maybe it might appear if I hit reply, I thought I would ask before doing it though.
I'll play around with it some more tomorrow. Thanks Barb! :D
 See, I even get a red X when I'm trying to explain something.
Barb101
01-26-04, 10:10 PM
LOL, I saw the X & was like, WTF is that? ;) Attachments aren't too hard. You just find an image from your hard drive you want to post through the attach file 'browse' button below your reply box. Then when you reply it's uploaded. :)
Your image url should look something like this, if linking...

It's just one of those days, LOL. I'll try again in the morning. :D
OK, I had been transposing a word in the URL. Anyway, I've pulled the pic from here, and will try to clean it up a bit. I was comparing the file size to the one that Freak posted of snow on the car, and my file was twice the size. I then saw it was 16-million colour, so I've cut it down to 256. When I'm happy with it, I'll put it in the Pets' Thread, and start on some more.
Wooo hooo! We be rolling now!

BTW, at the risk of postpadding, please, JB, I was trying to post a pic, but it did not come up when I tried to preview it. My mistake, with the URL. But will my pic normally come up when I preview it? It did come up eventually, after I had edited my post and fixed the URL.

You know what, I don't know. I never use preview and I never spell-check.
If it's an attachment, I would guess NO.
If an [IMG] tag, i would guess YES.

 Sorry, JB, I missed this somehow.
I'm using publish.hometown.aol.com/user name/images/pic.jpg.
I know a few people on another board that use this service, and this was the way they told me to do it with the image tags.
These are all my own pictures.

If that's a free host, or something that comes with an ISP account, it might not allow direct linking. Meaning it will be a RedX for most people. It will show up if it's in your cache, but not otherwise.

I guess all I can do for the time being is try it and see if the others can see the pics. It did work fine at an Ikonboard forum, and at an Invision Board forum. If not, then I'll try the attachment thing.
Thank you for your time, JB. :) I'll try to get some more pics scanned tonight. :D

I've found that the density of the picture (pixels per square inch) makes the difference, ie:If a picture is 300 ppsi it will enlarge much clearer than say, 75. The higher the resolution, the larger you can make it and it still be clear.
Anybody else got some other ideas?

Ok, this is going to be hard to explain.
Shotty or Sideout, I think a while back one of you were having problems with your color palatte etc. not appearing or something. You posted a question somewhere on these forums, but I can't find it. If I remember right, I helped you figure it out.
I would like to find that post, I have looked through "technically speaking" and this thread, as well as a couple others but can not find it.
The deal is my PS is having major issues. It will not open any toolboxes at all. the program opens, but nothing else. You can open an image, but can't edit it. I have uninstalled and re-installed to no avail. I am hoping any info I passed on earlier might clue me in, maybe a reg hack, but it has been to long and I can't remember.
I haven't had PS for months now and am having withdrawls.

Anyone up for sharing their favorite Photoshop hint, tip or techniques?
Well then....since nobody asked I'll tell you mine. I'm a big keyboard shortcut nut. I hate using those damn time wasting pulldowns. One shortcut I use constantly is the [ ] (bracket keys) for making your brushes larger or smaller.
This is especially handy if your trying to erase around an image and come to a part where you need a smaller brush size. Just use the bracket [] keys with one hand and the mouse with the other and it's almost painless. This works with the eraser tool and anything else your using brushes for.
Anyone got any others they use alot or am I just babbling here? :p

Thanks for that tip, Bucko. I too hate pulldowns. They take up way too much time. I've got a shitload of LISP routines for the Autocad just so I can avoid any pulldowns. I'll think of some shortcuts for the PS and get back.
P.S. (har har) If you know of any additional shortcuts, please tell us. If I knew how to incorporate LISP into PS, I'd do it.

I need some tips or a little direction...
I am trying to create an invitation (8.5 in X 5.5 in). I have a black and white photo that is going to take up the majority of the front, with some large lettering (28 font) at the bottom. Do I need to start big and then print small? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

That happens to me sometimes. when I've ended up working on something in 'indexed color' mode. If youa re, convert it to RGB or something else before you start manipulating it, adding text and whatnot.

We get tif scans of drawings from customers and they are just horrible on resolution. They're huge files and we can't do diddly with them.
One of my co-workers uses Corel to transfer drawings I convert into wmf files. She then uses whatever fonts she needs. She's tried tif files but they come out crappy. The high-res JPGs work ok, though.
I haven't had any trouble using JPGs with Adobe PS.

Since you're making invitations, your final target is printing - so you have to look at things a little different. tif and jpg are great for photos and on-screen stuff, but you have to get to something vector-based to get crisp fonts when you print it. Some examples are Adobe Illustrator, Pagemaker and InDesign, then there's Canvas, Freehand and probably a bunch of others. You have to get out of the paint app and get something meant for desktop publishing if you ever want to see the fonts really come out crisp and clean.

Yeah - work the photo in paint until you get it how you want it, then save it as a nice jpg - do the layout in draw and import (place) the jpg.

Okay, I've got my PS and I've started monkeying around with it. This is much easier to use that I expected. I even started chopping off heads and putting them on other bodies - which brings me to my question. I do all the work on a Macand everything looks really good. Windows used to have a program called 'Picture It'. The only easy thing I found about it was you could make any font into great 3D forms. You could set the depth, shadows, curves, all that stuff. Does anyone know if Adobe PS has that 3D capability? If it does, I haven't found it yet. I know I can do the curves and shadows, but not depth.

i have a question for any of you.... although it deals with regular digital photo prints, i thought maybe some of ya'll could help me..
i am NOT good a pics..
however, i took a fairly good pic of my girls and took it to have prints made. the 5x7 printed out really good, but the 8x10 got blurry...
when taking the photo, the camera image size was set to 640x480.
to get a clear 8x10, should i set that higher?
shotglass
01-18-07, 06:10 AM
Yes. What is the max megapixels you can get from that camera?
Your camera should have a slot for a digital memory card. Those are cheap these days, a 256 MB secure digital card is about $13. I always take pictures at the best resolution my camera can take them at, 5 megapixels. I can get a 20x30 print from that. Having extra memory for it means I can take pics all day long, download them at night and select which ones I want to print. 640x480 won't have enough information in the file to allow for the pic to be enlarged.
it goes up to 1600x1200
will that take a good 8x10?
ty shotty
shotglass
01-18-07, 07:48 AM
That size might be a bit grainy if you blow it up to 8x10. The person who really seems to know a lot about digital photography is Robb. Send him a PM, he can really help you out here.
I would recommend getting a new camera. You can get 5 MP for about $150 now, and it's well worth the price.
my daughter has one that is 6.0
i guess i should be using that one huh?

Help please!
I'm trying to make a wine label - this by itself isn't too difficult. The problem I have is that I need to print it and I'm not sure the best way to do this. The labels I have are four to a sheet and it doesn't look like there is a good way to do this in Photoshop. I tried exporting the image using the highest quality jpeg but it came out somewhat pixilated (my though being to position them on word or some reporting software). Should I be using a different format? Is this a problem with printing in general?
Thanks!!!
If you search around Adobe's page, there is a link where you can beta test CS3. Has anyone done a beta test for Adobe before? How was it? Just curious, as I have CS2 on back order now. (academic bookstore, yadda yadda yadda)
Sideout
02-04-07, 12:47 PM
It's not really a program of any sorts - you download CS3 beta and submit the form to get emailed a serial number - you must have a CS2 serial number to get one for the beta. It's pretty nice, native intel Mac support, etc. Looks like it's almost ready for release. If it crashes, it gives you the option of sending feedback.
Thanks SO. No reason to bother with it if that's the case.

I remember going through this thread, and reading it many moons ago, and forgot how informative it is.
Not having Photoshop, I do have other programs that I don't completely know how to use. One is Paint. With having Windows XP Media 2005, it came with programs I don't understand:
Digital Media Enhancements
Works
Picture it! 10
Microsoft Clip Organiser.
I have added other things, not always on purpose, but inadvertantly through toys I bought, like the stuff that comes with a Kodak digital camera (its own program, and Quick Time picture..... whatever the hell QTP, is!), HP Image Zone (I have a scanner that does negatives, and was playing with it, and it will test ones patience), and, of course, Adobe.
The only thing I use with any confidence because I normally just do resize and colour enhancement, is Infranveiw. I love this program!!!
Any suggestions on these programs would be considered a reason to buy a beer for everyone.
Just don't try and talk me out of not using Infranveiw.... I resize everything in it... It is my go to program for stuff that's too damn big.

I use Irfanview all the time also. It's quick & easy to use when you don't want to open one of your large programs.
What exactly are you asking for suggestions for? How to use the programs you mentioned?
Works is good for quick databases, spreadsheet, pie charts/graphs, word processing & their built in occasion cards, awards, & whatnot. I think I had Picture It a while back but don't think I used it much. As for the rest...buh
