Washington Times (http://washingtontimes.com/national/20060109-123424-3544r.htm) - Democrats said yesterday that they may block the Supreme Court nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., depending on the answers the nominee gives at his Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings, which begin today.

Sen. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat and a member of the committee, said that if Judge Alito refuses to answer questions on issues that Democrats deem vital, the party will be more likely to block the nomination.

"If he continuously, given his previous record, refused to answer questions and hid behind 'I can't answer this because it might come before me,' it would increase the chances of a filibuster," Mr. Schumer said.

"If I believed he was going to go in there and overthrow Roe ... most likely 'yes,'" said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, when asked on "Fox News Sunday" whether she would filibuster the nomination.

I saw Feinstein yesterday, and wanted to ask her what she meant by 'overthrow' the Roe decision. Everyone with a brain knows she should have used the word 'overturn'. :idiot:

I can't wait. It didn't take long for them to go back on their word.

Some Democrat: Will you aim to make abortion illegal again?
Judge: No.

Problem solved.

Unless you think banning abortion would be a step forward.:fbomb:

Odd, you're against the death penalty, but for abortion.

I can't wait. It didn't take long for them to go back on their word.I don't recall anyone saying they wouldn't filabuster. I do recall that when they confirmed Roberts so quickly they did send a message that the next one would be a much longer and tougher confirmation.

I saw Schumer today grilling Alito about a few things. Schumer is totally obsessed with killing babies. It seems to be his main concern in life. He held up a copy of the Constitution and repetedly asked Alito if Alito believed it protects the right to abortions. Alito was trying to make several points on case-law but Schumer would continually interrupt him and then accuse him of not answering. Alito should have looked him in the eye and said, "In the case of your mother, yes!" Twice, Schumer tossed the Constitution copy away, just as he has his entire life. The second time he did it Alito should have stood up and told that communist ratbag son-of-a-bitch that if he threw it again he'd wipe the floor with him.

You know, I really don't get why everyone gets all up in arms about abortion. Me? I don't think abortion is a good thing, but you had better believe that if my 16 yr old daughter came home and said she was pregnant or that maybe she got pregnant in a rape I would want it as an available option.

Now the death penalty is another thing. They can't inflict it on criminals enough in my opinion. I'll go so far as to want the death penalty imposed on purse snatchers. No joke. Fuck criminal bastards and any heart that bleeds for them.

The deal was that they would reserve the filibuster for extreme cases. That was how they stopped the "nuclear option".

Not really odd, if you think about it.:bore: Yet you can't explain your apparent conflicting positions.

....

I think if they restricted it to the first trimester the vast majority of peope would support that and the intense argument would be over. But the Democrats insist on killing babies right up to the moment of birth. It is politically stupid and morally wrong. A lot of people have moved over to the GOP because of this.

Partial birth abortion- think about that one. How sick can you be to do that?
