Just saw the History Channel show about Midway. Very well done!! There was quite a bit of footage that wasn't really Midway (F-14s launching, angle deck cat shots, etc) but overall it told a great story about the ship. All the history was accurate and there were lots of cameo appearances by Midway crewmen, many of whom I know as docents. I'm sure it will be on again later in the week. If anyone finds out what time, get it posted here. I'll want to tape it.
Hey Navybob, I spilt your post off as a seperate thread. I meant to start one earlier this morning. Glad to see someone beat me to it. :)
I watched the show last night and I thought they did a great job telling the ship's story. Sure there was footage from other carriers and the crash video they showed was actually a T-2 crash on the Lex, but there was a lot of Midway footage I've never seen before, like some of the Operation Sandy footage. There was some other minor mistakes, but only a Midway vet would notice or even care. I was really glad to see it wasn't produced like a lot of the documentaries are these days. The shows that have to recount everything after commercial breaks drives me nuts and there was none of that... thank gawd.
So, who else saw it and what did you think?
What was the exact name of the piece so I can TIVO it? Saw a piece about the Ronny Reagan last week. It was amazing seeing women building bombs. What is this world coming to?
Hey Gary, I tivo'd it with a keyword search of USS Midway. I checked yesterday and it isn't scheduled for rebroadcast yet. I just got an e-mail from Scott McGaugh, Midway's Marketing Director about the show being converted to DVD. Here is what Scott sent me for an announcment;
Exclusive Update from the USS Midway:
Buzz,
I just got off the phone with the producer of the USS Midway program shown this week on the History Channel. He and I worked most of the past summer on the project. All in all I thought his crew did an outstanding job. They necessarily had to rely on some footage from other carriers, but used CV41 footage whenever possible.
We are now working on making the program available on DVD (sans commercials) for sale, for use in the museum, and even possibly bundled with my book, Midway Magic. The producer and I also will be working on a “short,” which will be about a 15-minute version for various uses as well, possibly even using portions on our website.
This is expected to come together in Jan-Feb or 2006. We’ll keep folks posted with updates, at www.midway.org, in the museum’s membership newsletter, Currents, and an e-newsletter just for Midway veterans I’m starting after the first of the year.
Happy holidays to the extended Midway family.

Will have to watch for it re-air. Sorry I missed it. As for F-14's there were two that were landed and later lauched. Can't recall the dates but it was late 1983. Here are some of the pics I took.

Hey Outlw36, Welcome! Outstanding photos shipmate. I was on deck when the Entreprise Tomkitties trapped and when we shot them off the next day. I have photos of them after they trapped here;

and the Midway Multiplex issue;

The footage on the show was not the Enterprise Cats, in fact they were never mentioned. They failed to mention the NORPACS as well. Too bad, since those were hellacious ops.
James, can I upload your pics to the CV41.ORG photo gallery? You'll get credit for them. If you have any other photos you would like to submit I'd be more than happy to post them. Just e-mail them to Eagle3@cv41.org.
Thanks and again, welcome to the zoo. ;)

Thanks Jim. It looks like two of the photos above smaller than the other two. Could you e-mail me larger copies whenever you get a chance? Thanks!
I saw the special on the Midway. It was an excellent show. It brought back alot of memories. I think I could probably still find my way around on her as if I were onboard yesterday. :thumbsup:
I only saw the tail end of the program. Would like to purchase a tape or cd from the History Channel as a collectors item. :thumbsup:

A correction to my earlier post:
The DVD is ready to ship now! :D
I guess they finished the production run early and instead of February, they're already shipping them out.

I received my copy today.
Good News! No annoying "History Channel" watermark on the lower right corner of the screen. :thumbsup:
So so news - No chapters, or extra material. Plain packaging. Full screen format.
It does contain a lot of footage of the ship that I haven't seen anywhere else before. I'm sure you could get this stuff from the national archives, but not for $24 + shipping. I looked into getting some national archive footage copied of Operation Sandy and a few other topics and it isn't cheap.
