Any truth to this story?

Sydney's racist mob violence spreads (http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2005/12/11/1134235936217.html)

A day of race-fuelled violence at Cronulla spread through other beachside suburbs in Sydney's south on Sunday night, with one man stabbed and at least 10 arrested.

About 5,000 people descended on Cronulla beach as mobs yelling racist chants chased down and bashed people of Middle Eastern appearance.

Police and an ambulance crew were also assaulted as racial tensions peaked.

Hopes that the violence had subsided by nightfall were dashed when, in an apparent retaliatory strike, a 23-year-old man was stabbed in the back outside a golf club at nearby Woolooware.

Two cars carrying a group of males, described by police as being of Mediterranean or Middle Eastern appearance, approached the man at about 10.25pm (AEDT) Sunday night.

Following a short conversation he was stabbed in the back, and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

At about the same time, up to 50 carloads of youths smashed more than 100 cars with baseball bats and other weapons in the beach suburb of Maroubra.

Riot police were also called to the beachside suburb of Brighton-le-Sands to control groups of brawling youths who had reportedly thrown projectiles at police.

Some groups in the crowd, estimated to have peaked at 5,000, also stomped on and swarmed around police cars trying to move from one violent flare-up to the next.

I've heard it's the world's most beeeutifil city. Oh, well looks like the class will be full. This ranks right up there with the Aussie "what to do incase of terrorist attack" refrigerator magnets. I know I still have mine that Jilly sent me.

Therapy for would-be terrorists
http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,17536306-2,00.html

TERRORIST suspects under house arrest will be sent to anger management school, given psychological counselling and offered training and education in a bid to turn them from violence.

The Federal Government is developing a program to rehabilitate potential terrorists who authorities have deemed a threat to public safety and placed under control orders.
The measures were approved last week by Parliament as part of the new anti-terrorism laws and will apply to those detained without charge on suspicion that their movements should be restricted to prevent an attack.

Attorney-General Philip Ruddock believes the measures will address alienation and help impressionable would-be terrorists learn the error of their ways.

They assaulted two lifesavers on the beach the weekend before. Lifesavers and the beach - they're Aussie icons!!!! God help the next person 'of Middle Eastern appearance' who gets into difficulty on our beaches. They might just find a foot on their head.

Up til now, we'd always used the 'Ignore it and it'll go away method', but we've decided it's time to get serious about it. ;) (well, that's apart from the fridge magnets :p ).

So I take it you guys don't put any merit behind the power of the fridge magnet.

You naysayers are the same negative people who made the WIN buttons fail in the 70s. :Poke:

This country has just taken a very sharp and unexpected turn to the right....
The Aussies have been pushed to this by a prolonged period of people of Middle Eastern appearance pushing them around on their own beaches, just in case it hasn't already been mentioned. Two surf lifesavers were set upon in the lead up to the backlash, and there are many reports of women and children being intimidated by these peace loving Middle Eastern people. Something had to give.

Sydney's the 'riot city'. They've had a few now - Redfern, Macquarie Fields and now Cronulla.....and the odd soccer riot :)

Ah, the glories of multiculturalism.

Tookie would have put an end to gang violence in Oz. And you all would have welcomed him too being how you loathe the death penalty. What Oz needs is for some murderous criminal to write a kids book and sell a couple hundred copies and then all will be right in the world.

That point aside, I'd venture a bet that not all middle eastern people are out there intimidating the indigenous Aussies. Am I wrong, MissC?

Well RH you are right. But even before this ever got this way say 10 years ago I watched a thing in parlament while I was in Australia and it was about the aboriginals and the tensions they had been experiencing, like this issue had just cropped up. Also not to mention the influx of chinese that came over before Hong Kong closed up and now the middle eastern folk. From my perspective it seemed to me the Aussies liked guest but at the same time they like to keep things the way they have it. Which is really normal. I almost stayed in Australia, and that was one of the factors why I wanted to live there. People just need to know there place. One thing I remember while living in Japan the Iranians were just taking over Tokyo and they were doing this simaliar thing with this hate and discontent. I would go up to Harajuku and hang out but it got so obnixious that it wasn't fun anymore. They would have rioted but they knew they'd get a smack down.

Indigenous Aussies are our fellow Aboriginal citizens.

These attacks were targetted at fair haired surfie types. Scary :worry: All's quite on the western front here last night though.

Function: adjective
1 : having originated in and being produced, growing, or living naturally in a particular region or environment <a disease indigenous to the tropics> <colonization by small numbers of indigenous enteric bacteria —C. M. Kunin et al>
If you're born there, you're indigenous. Unless you mean aborigines are a tropical disease of sorts. Attempts at being politically correct are gorked (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=gork) at best.
