It appears that California may be the next to join the anti hand-held-cell-phone-while-driving hysteria. I can't be the only one who finds this so ludicrous that it's almost funny. Almost.
Government is going wacky. We've got legislators in Sacramento trying to legislate what kids should and shouldn't eat in school, what kind of salad dressing we can order in restaurants, and worrying about the weight of backpacks that kids carry to schools.
Now, they are gonna tell us that, unless we want to pay for the privilege in the form of a 20-50 dollar fine, we can't talk on our cell phones while driving. Lame. What's next?
Are they gonna ban drive thru windows because, as studies show, eating while driving is the cause of far more accidents than cell phone use?
Are they gonna ban stereos in cars because again, as studies show, far more accidents are caused by motorists adjusting their stereos than by cell phone use?
How about banning the transport of small children? Parents trying to discipline their kids while driving are also a cause of accidents.
Should Starbucks not be allowed to sell coffee to go anymore because drinking coffee in the car, along with eating, causes more accidents than cell phone use?
How about cosmetics? Should the transport of cosmetics be banned, as are drugs and open containers? One may be just as tempted to start putting on makeup while driving as they are to take a chug off that open container.
I'm waiting for this to get even more ridiculous. I'm waiting for some lame ass to sue a cell phone company because they were in a car accident where a driver was using the cell phone. Hey, it may sound ridiculous, but money grubbing amorals have been successful at suing tobacco and firearms companies for cases just as, if not more ludicrous.
In a very insulting, yet not too surprising example of legislator hypocrisy, Joe Simitian, the Assemblyman who is pushing this legislation was being interviewed by a reporter about the hazards of cell phone use while driving and how he's gonna fight for this law and save us from ourselves and it's all for the kids and blah blah blah. The insulting part? He was in his car talking to the reporter from his cell phone.
Instead of worrying about driving while talking, we should start thinking about the perils of legislating while stupid.
