Working in the office of an elected official is never boring. The constant barrage of random and bizarre phone calls and letters from those we represent keep things entertaining.<p>We, like every other political office in which I've had the pleasure of working, have our share of "regulars". Those who call, write and/or stop by on a regular basis. Most are harmless and quite entertaining, although we do have our share of restraining orders – which means we now know the local CHP officers on a first name basis (not an entirely unpleasant fact!).<p>One of our favorite regulars called in earlier this week. She's great because she just likes to talk, never asks for anything, and especially likes it when we come back to her with bizarre responses. She usually calls about twice a week, and always in response to a recent news item. This week it was the accidental bombing in Kuwait. Last week was the school shooting in Santee.<p>Here's a close representation of our most recent conversation:
<p>Her – "Did you hear about that bum that killed those people in Kuwait?"<br>Me – "Bum?"<br>Her – "No, bomb. I mispronounce that word sometimes. Like Peter Sellers."<br>Me – "Oh yes, the bomb. I did hear about that."<br>Her – "Yea, well what happened was, the captain of the plane was eating fruit loops."<br>Me – "Oh, well, they aren't allowed to do that."<br>Her – "I know, but he was."<br>Me – "They are only allowed to eat captain crunch."<br>Her – "Oh, well, maybe that was it."<br>Me – "It must have been. Captain crunch is the official cereal of the armed forces."<br>Her – "Oh. That was it. Okay, thank you very much. Bye."<p>Why is it that every time there is a school shooting, the commies start crying and whining about guns and taking them away from us, but they are suspiciously silent when fruit loops kill our servicemen?<p>Where's the outcry against Toucan Sam?
