Brussels Journal (http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/382) - Jyllands-Posten is being protected by security guards and several cartoonists have gone into hiding after the newspaper published a series of twelve cartoons (view them here (http://pics.jp.dk/nybillede/default.asp?id=2253&pixid=31783)) about the prophet Muhammad. According to the Islam it is blasphemous to make images of the prophet. Muslim fundamentalists have threatened to bomb the paper’s offices and kill the cartoonists.

The newspaper published the cartoons when a Danish author complained that he could find no-one to illustrate his book about Muhammad. Jyllands-Posten wondered whether there were more cases of self-censorship regarding Islam in Denmark and asked twelve illustrators to draw the prophet for them. Carsten Juste, the paper’s editor, said the cartoons were a test of whether the threat of Islamic terrorism had limited the freedom of expression in Denmark. - Whole Story (http://www.brusselsjournal.com/node/382)

Now that the jihadists have zeroed in on Denmark, does this mean no more of those Christmas tins of butter cookies?

Muslims are barred from eating pork in the Koran and consider pigs unclean.

Well, they shouldn't be eating while on the toilet to begin with.

Having looked at the photos this was not a simple case of drawing the prophet but the photos all depict the prophet in a negative manner. They intentially tried to stir up Muslims to act against the paper. My best advice would be to right them letters of opposition. Regardless of their content I dont think violence is right.

It was an editorial cartoon. :what:

Come on FH.

I see cartoon editorial pictures everyday that intentionally portray Conservatives badly. Will you come to my defense if I find them 'offensive'?

???

Will you give the same blanket of protection to me?

Hey Farouka, would you be arguing against Arab newspapers for portraying Jews in a bad light? Or Moses? Or Jesus? How about Sharon with a big nose (to exploit a stereotype)?

Maybe you would and maybe not, but I bet no western government would throw a shitfit asking for an apology like the dummass hypersensitive inferiority-complex-driven wankstains and Imams and clerics running the mid-east.

Oh wait a sec ... it's Israel that runs the mid-east. I forgot. :bore:

I don't think its proper to portray any religious figures in a bad light. However when people do cartoons that make fun of someone, people get mad and protest and so on and so forth. I was trying to point out that the paper tried to act surprised when it got a negative response when they had to have known what happened.

Hey free press and speech means dealing with things that you dont agree with. As for people reacting in the west with a ballistic tantrum, it happens all of the time. Remember when Janet Jackson's Boob popped out? Alternatively, how about when Mel Gibson release the Passion. Many times people here have displayed massive tantrums over cartoons, tv shows, new stories, moves, etc. Public outrage is not unique to the Muslim world.

As for Denmark and other N. European countries as much as love them they are notorious for their bigotry against Muslims and Jews.

I may be remembering incorrectly, but I think Denmark was quite big on an underground railroad for Jews and smuggled several of them through to Sweden as the only way of the continent for Jews trapped in Northern Europe under the Nazi regime.

Yep. They mainly hid them in fishing boats and then let them off in Swedish waters on other boats. Sweden was neutral so, the Germans wouldn't cross the boundry.

The article is in german but I'll do a quick translation of a few tidbits...

Kuwait will dänische Produkte boykottieren
(Kuwait wants to boycott danish products) (http://de.news.yahoo.com/060128/12/4umrv.html)The protests are expanding in muslim countries against caricatures of the prophet Muhammed in a danish newspaper. The union of government supermarkets in Kuwait is considering a boycott of danish products. They will decide upon it on Sunday. In addition the danish ambassador in Saudi Arabia was ordered (to remain in) the foreign ministry. Saudi Arabia recalled its ambassador in Denmark.

The Organization of Islamic Conference also leveled criticism, stating that the danish government failed to approach this with the proper seriousness. Protests against the 30 caricatures were also held in Kuwait City.

Among these Muhammed was shown wearing a turban in the shape of a bomb. In others he was shown with a gray beard and a sword, with black rectangles covering his eyes. The newspaper refuses to apologise, citing freedom of the press. Several muslim countries are demanding an apology from the danish government.

I hope Denmark holds true and doesn't cave. It's a danish paper printed and distributed on danish soil targeted at danish people with values that praise freedom and not this petty religious bullshit. If Kuwait wants to boycott danish products, fine. These mid-east blowhards look for any reason to go apeshit anyway. Given that the muslims in the mid east don't do much of jackshit against terrorists acting in the name of their religion, do they really expect others to have a great impression of their beliefs. Get a grip.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could give Israel about 600 small nukes, and let them have some fun? 1000 foot tall mushroom clouds in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Jordan, Egypt, Syria...what fun!

Far-right UK party to print Muslim cartoon

LONDON (Reuters) - The far-right British National Party (BNP) said on Wednesday it would distribute leaflets showing a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad, a move Muslim groups said would provoke protests and was "playing with fire."

A spokesman for the tiny fringe party, which has no seats in parliament but a handful on local councils, said its use of the image was not intended to cause offence, but illustrated how Islam and Western values did not mix.

The party says it is not racist, but its leader Nick Griffin and another activist are due in court on race-hate charges in October.

...

The leaflet asks "Which Do You Find Offensive? A cartoon of Mohammad with a bomb for a turban or Muslim demonstrators calling for terrorist attacks on Europe and the 'extermination' of non-Muslims?"
"By showing you just how mild and inoffensive the cartoon is, we're giving you the chance to see for yourself the huge gulf that exists between the democratic values that we share, and the medieval views that dominate Islam, even supposedly 'moderate' versions," the leaflet said.

The party spokesman said the BNP wanted the cartoon to provoke debate. "We published the cartoon not to offend individual Muslims -- that's most important -- but to make a stand for freedom," he said.

The move drew immediate condemnation.

"The BNP are playing with fire and there can be no doubt they are doing this in order to try to raise tensions and provoke conflict," the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said.

"We would urge all British Muslims to not fall into the trap laid by the far right," added MCB spokesman Inayat Bunglawala.

"British Muslims should refuse to be provoked and continue to keep all protests peaceful and firmly within the law."

Around 15,000 Muslims staged a peaceful protest against the drawings in London last week.

Well I find it extremely offensive when they burn American flags or effigies of Bush but we don't start jihads over it.
