The 13th Warrior
There are not nearly enough movies of this genre, the medieval epic. If your a fan, don't miss it. 13th Warrior is unique in that it's a tale of Viking warriors, not the usual courtish chivalry, English or French style. Antonio Banderas plays a muslim emissary who by some twist of fate sails off with a group of twelve north men to defend home turf against an unspeakable evil. Vladimir Kulich plays Buliwyf, the leader/king of this group of warriors. While Banderas is mostly there for the several dozen close-ups and scant comic relief, Kulich makes for an ideal Norse chieftain. This isn't so much an epic as an isolated story that could have conceivably been plucked from the oral tradition of one small Viking war band. As such it succeeds, but don't expect more.
Score 5/10
