My Dog has a courtesy laugh

You know what a courtesy laugh is?

When someone doesn't really want to be bothered by you, or isn't really listening to what you have to say and they nod and occassionally chuckle OR when someone tells a joke and people give off this phony laugh because they think it's a social requirement.

The courtesy laugh is almost always obvious in humans, but it finally dawned on me today that my little dog Phoebe has one too.

This morning as I was getting ready for work, I was talking to her as she sat on the bed. She was laying down but watching me, occassionally wagging her tail when some stray word caught her fancy. Then, somewhere within the context of our 'conversation' I said "Good Girl"...

Her eyes winced making her look somewhat Oriental...
The ends of mouth curled upward like a smile...
The tail wagged...
She raised her head...
She made a slight movement, as if she was going to get up and come over...
and then...
She fell back down, sighed, her eyes looked straight up and then away towards the wall.

Then I realized that she does that exact same move quite often. Then it hit me... that's a damn courtesy laugh. My dog has been 'dissing' me.
